HI all my name is mariah im from canada. I was diagnosed with pcos on oct 8. For years i was told by my doctor that i wasnt working hard enough to lose my baby weight. I was also told taht i was under stress for the past four years and that it was my marriage causing the stress, and the big kicker of all that is she said i wouldnt get my period and my hair wouldnt stop falling out and acne wont clear up until i change my lifestyle(meaning leaving my husband). I was told i was ina depression and taht i was becoming manic/depressive. So pretty much i was told all the symptoms i have was cuz i was going crazy i have 3 kids and a husband (who really is going crazy because of me) and im just so happy to have found this site. you all seem so nice and supportive of one another and i really really look forward to meeting people on here.
I would really embrace some medication advice as i have an appointment on monday to discuss all the options. In addition i would love some weight loss help im tired of being asked when my due date is

Mariah - I'm so sorry your doctor has been making you feel like your symptoms of pcos are your fault, or that you're going crazy. There's just no excuse for a dr doing that to a patient at all! As for the medical advice, if you're open to taking any meds to help the symptoms of pcos, there is a lot of info on this website. I don't know too much about them all since I've only been dx'd since May, and I haven't taken any meds for pcos, except clomid (to ovulate). I've read a lot about metformin on this website and it might be a med that would be right for you. (Don't take my word on that, but I know a lot of women are on it and it helps them immensely.) There is even a whole page under medications that is all about metformin. HTH! I'm glad you found SC!

welcome!! Some doctors definately don't handle PCOS very well. But there are a few who are great in ddealing with PCOS. Try finding a new doc in your area who is knowledgable about it. You can check out the Locate a Doc or Reccomend a Doc threads. BTW, if you need to find one, ask the nurse, or whoever you can talk to, hpw many of the doc's patients suffer with PCOS. if there are quite a few, there's a good chance that he or she handles the problem well and doesn't just blow it off. good luck and let us know how it goes!

thank you so much for your words of support. the dr that diagnosed me is great she actually told me to do some research to make an informed decision about medication. My husband is really happy now too he likes the fact that there is a medical explaination as to why ive been so up and down. He did not believe the old dr (can you blame him) he said he knew that i didnt need psychiatric help lol.
Now i just cant wait to see the dr and get everything back on track.
ill just let you all know a little more about me i have 3 beautiful kids they are 12,9,4 girl boy girl. reading more and more about pcos makes me even more glad that i had my kids while i could. im a stay at home mom for right now just enjoying my last lil one i have one question though, ive noticed in the past few years ive been more prone to yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis is that bc of pcos?
Welcome, Welcome. I sure hope you find the support and info you need. Just remember it is not your fault and i am so glad you found a new, great dr. hang in there. enjoy those kids! take care.

Welcome Mariah. No, you are not going crazy!! You've come tot he right place to learn about PCOS.
Take a look at the stickies in this forum. It will help you when you go to the doc.
A lot of cysters have great success taking metformin/glucophage!!
i just have to say WOW you guys really have it ALL here dont you. Ive been reading ALL day long and every teeny tiny thing that ive been going through is on here even the most embarrasing things ive never told anyone( blisters, bv etc.).
I feel soooooooooooooo good right now and i love that i found you guys BEFORE my dr. appt. now i know what to explain to her. im just sooo amazed that the embarrasing things dont seem so embarrasing now. ive NEVER felt soo much relief like this before. words cannot describe how i feel right now.
I think i may have just met the most AMAZING women to ever grace the earth.
I personally just started taking glucophage(metformin) about a month ago, and I have already had a period! It has been 6 months since I have had one, so it must be working! I have lost 6 lbs, and feel pretty good. There can be some bad side effects with it, personally mine were minimum, diahhrea for two nights, and nausea off and on, but no side effects remain now. You just have to try to power through the first few weeks. Also another part of helping your PCOS is your diet. My doctor sent me straight to a nutritionest who put me on a low carb, high protein diet. The most important thing is to not eat carbs without protein. Example... don't just eat a piece of fruit for breakfast, very terrible for women with PCOS. You can research the web for diets, if you would like to know more about the diet I am on, email me and I will be happy to give you more info on it. I wish you well... never give up!

Heidi Diagnosed September 2005 Age 26 Initial Symptoms: Irregular cycles, hirutism, weight gain, depression, panic attacks. Meds: Glucophage 750mg x 3, b-complex w/ex folic acid Weight loss: 40lbs in first year Diet: Low carb/High Protein, whey protein shakes Since prego: prenatals with 1mg of folic acid, still continuing with high dose of glucophage, colace, 6 ultrasounds that look good so far.
Canadiangirl: As other cysters have already informed you....the best advice I can give is to look into the follow topics....
Insulin Resistance - Do you have it? What are the signs? What can help? Metformin/Glucophage - Most cysters (though not all!) benefit from even small doses of this medication. Would you? (Ask a doctor) Low-Carb diet - Most cysters have benefited greatly from this type of diet. There is Atkins/South Beach/and Insulin Resistance diet. Research and discover which would be best for you. Not necessarily easy, but which would give you the results you are looking for?
I'm sure other cysters have tons more to add to this list, but consider this list your homework and once you research these topics there will be tons more to follow. GooD LucK and Chin Up!
