Unhappy Newbie needs advice about hair

Hi everyone

I'm new here. I have a problem with my hair. It's been falling out for a couple of years now. At first I didn't really take much notice, but then I noticed it was coming out in clumps whenever I washed it. I've had PSOS now for a couple of years and mildly for years before that. (I'm 24). I weigh over 160lbs I think and till last week, I was battling an addiction to chocolate and crackers and popcorn. I still have trouble with bread especially, you see, my family considers it a staple, essential kind of food, and it's always the usual fare.

But looking through these sites (which are great BTW), I am getting very anxious. I don't know if I can keep to a diet without bread at least twice a day if I don't have a strong motivator beside me. My family thinks I'm just weak and lazy. A friend of mine had PCOS (she's still got the skin spots and stretch marks for proof), but she lost all her weight with the help of a personal trainer and she has HEAPS of motivation and energy. I wish I could be like her, but I have a much more depressive personality and because I'm unemployed (just graduated), I don't know if I can afford a personal trainer. I guess I just need to know if there's a springboard I can start off from.

Oh, and the important question: Does hair grow back once it's lost? Or am I going to go bald like a man, even if I lose weight and reverse my PCOS? This is what's really bothering me. Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Angie.

Talking I was too once a lover of bread!

Hey Welcome and you are not alone. I'm hispanic and i feel you on the part about the bread eating. I'm up to 235 now when about 2yrs ago i was like 175 and cute . It was hard explaining to my parents that i couldn't eat my favorite spanish style foods anymore especially since they are so high in carbohydrates. They thought i was anoxeric or something. I still wish i was 150pounds and 19 yrs old before i found out i had pcos so i could eat and drink anything i wanted, but those days r over girlfriend and if no one else wants to face that you are different then forget them, just realize that when you slip, which i do frequently my down fall is taco bell and mcdonald's which right across the way from my house, you are really only hurting yourself in the long run. Tell them no and turn the hell away from the food table

Re: the hair falling out, i now don't lose as much as i did in the beginning, maybe is because i'm on the med's

Hey i'll add you to my pm lists and will keep in touch if you want, all the support you will ever need is on this website, i come here almost every nite Take care!

I know what you mean about the hair loss--mine just started falling out a couple of weeks ago, so I don't have any advice on that subject.

However, have you thought about trying the Insulin Resistance Diet? There's quite a bit of info on it found throughout this website, and you can get the book at almost any major bookstore. It has been a major factor in my weight loss. I've been on it almost two months (I think) and I think it's great. I too love bread and it's a staple in our household also. On the IR diet I'm able to have just a limited amount everyday and I have found that I just don't need it anymore. The IR diet is an easy and cheap way to get started on the road to success.

Flalatina is right about the support on this website. It's outstanding. I had absolutely no one to go to for advice or support in this area of my life until I found this site. I've found that for almost every symptom I have there is someone else with the same thing.

Sorry I couldn't help with the hair loss, but I'm sure some one else will be able to.

Take care,

Hi FLALATINA

Thanks for your reply. You sound like a woman with a lot of willpower. I find it hard to say no a lot of the time to food being offered to me. Somehow I think it's nicer to believe my mum's "it's okay to eat that" than to believe what she's giving me is going to hurt my body.

I'm so new to this, I literally only became aware of how serious my problem is two days ago, when I found this site. I've been to the GP about my symptoms but only was told to lose weight, that's all they knew to tell me 2 years ago. I hope more info will come to light on this. I'm still hoping they'll one day discover one thing that is causing it that can easily be fixed, instead of having to alter our diets etc.

This may sound crazy, but I was so addicted to junk food for many times throughout the last few years, and I ate so much sugar, do you think my body just 'wrecked' from it? It sure sounds rational; overdosing on sugar and then not even being able to eat good carbs like bread. Maybe over time, with a low carb diet, the body fixes itself.

Please excuse my rambling; I'm still kind of in shock. Like you, I was always so healthy, eating whatever at 18 wasn't a sin. I'm glad I came across this site (and you!) because this kind of disorder can make you feel so lonely.

BTW, what's a pm list? I'd love to be on it.

Keep well,
A.

Really? I'll check it out! What do you replace your bread etc with? Is the IR diet like the Carbohydrate Addict's diet? Because I went to their site and they have been getting good results too.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I hope it hasn't been too hard on you. You know it seems like I knew all about how to correct my PCOS all along but just didn't make it a priority until now. That's what gives me hope in all this. God always seems to give people time to deal with all the different problems in their lives, and that proves that it's never too late to do something about something, because in some great cosmic way, it's all timed.

Thanks for your advice, I'll get on it!

Peace.

Hi Eva,
I have been on rogaine for about 15 years with great success. When I first started using it, it was 50 bucks a months and bt rx only. I resisted getting using it because of the cost until the bald spots started to show up. Fortunately, the price now can be as low as $23 for a 3 months supply if you pruchase generic. Dont worry about wether it says for men or women. Same ingredients, just a packaging thing.

As happy as I was, and still am with rogaine, It didnt get me back to the super full hair that I had when I was younger. Spironolactone has done that for me. I have been using it for a year now. Unfortunately you CAN NOT allow yourself to become pregnant while taking spiro . Where rogaine is belived to only lower dyhydrotestosterone, which is the hormone that triggers the hair loss, spiro lowers testosterone in general and will cause birth defects in boys as well as girls. Any decent doctor will not give you a Rx for spiro unless you are either on BCPs or like me had a tubal ligation. I used rogaine my entire pregnancy with no problems what so ever.

If you are wondering, I still use the rogaine with the spironolactone. Maybe its overkill, but for the wonderful head of hair that I now possess, it doesnt matter to me.

HI and welcome!!

The best advice I can give is that YOU will be your biggest motivation. I haven't been/wasn't the best when it came to will power until my body started doing things that just simply brought be to tears when I looked in the mirror. I only wish I had had the strength to make changes 5 years ago, when the symptoms first started to catch my attention..

As far as hair loss, mine wasn't even noticeable until about 2 yrs ago. Now I have a bald spot on my crown which fills in off and on...but never goes completely away. All I can say is if you don't think you have the will power now, then trust me, you will later. The worse thing we can do is act like this condition will just go away. Thats what I did, and now its harder than ever to try to take my body back.

Really, its not so bad. Its just changing old habits for new ones. Set small goals for yourself, like only eating the bread you love once or twice a week..then gradually ween yourself off. Cold turkey doesn't seem to work for me, and I've found that if I let myself cheat once in a while, I'll be "good" 6 days out of 7 now.

I hope this helps a little...just remember, you're NOT ALONE...so many of us are going through the exact same thing.

Much love!
