Unhappy Newbie with question about Biopsy, HELP PLEASE !!!

Hi everyone, first I have to start by saying thank you very much for all the time and attention that you give this site. If it were not for the information I gathered here over the last 2 years (unregistered, just lurking) I still might not know what causes all of my seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Long story short....I started noticing strange things going on with my body about 2.5 years ago. I had a Hystorectomy (please excuse my spelling) in November 2001 (Ovaries left), and a followup surgery in April 2003 to correct a prolapsed fallopian tube and remove scar tissue that was causing pain. After this I started to notice facial hair, terrible ACNE!!! Muscle pain, lightheadedness, thinning hair, depression and complete loss of all sex drive!. I started complaining to my Gyn about these and asking if he thought there was a Hormone imbalance that was causing these things. He immediantly said "no, your ovaries were perfectly healthy, things will improve!". I trust him so I didn't questions farther. Things did not improve but got worse, so I went to see my GP for her opinion, I had been seeing her regularly about some of these things anyway, she agreed that something was not right and ordered Testosterone levels, and hormone panels and ordered ultrasounds of ovaries (both had cysts). They were only very slightly abnormal, so still no answers there. This continued until the acne got so bad that my face hurt so bad that I was taking pain relievers and anti inflamitory drugs along with every anti-acne product known to man. It only got worse!! (Sorry this is long anyway!! )

So I finally went to see a derm. and got a prescription for Retinal A cream (gosh that is expensive!!) and Klaron lotion. Tried this for 2 months, no change. Saw GP again, about the acne, got a scrip for Doxicyclen took that for 4 months...no change! Saw GP again and told her about the things I had read here and the PCOS test from this site, and asked her if she thought PCOS could be my prob. It was like a light went on and she said she felt like that could be it, and she was sorry that she hadn't suspected it before. She ordered an insulin resistance test...but guess what................ it was NORMAL!!! Went back to her in complete disgust!! This time I got a referal to a Endo and Derm that speciallizes in Adult Acne, I saw the Derm first and told him that I had already tried everything else and that I was there for an Accutane scrip, It worked WONDERS!!!! My skin cleared completely. But you can't take it more than 5 months or so at a time.
Anyway, I saw the Endo Dr. Monday and came armed with results for every blood test, ultrasound and med that I have been through since this all started. He listened to everything I ahd to say, asked about my strong family history of Diabetes and FINALLY told me he was almost certain that PCOS was the root. Even though the IR test had been normal. He then began his routine physical starting with my Thyroid glands. Thats when things got scary!!! He found a "nodule" on my right gland, and he seems VERY concerned. He scheduled massive blood work (8 tubes drawn on Wed this week). Gave me a prescription for Zenical 3 times daily and Decadron to be taken at 11:00pm the night before I come in to have a second set of the same blood test.

Questions:
Has anyone ever been prescribed Decadron before lab work, I searched the web for info on it, all I could find said it was steriod prescribed for CANCER!!

Also, he said he will do an ultrasound and a needle biopsy on the "nodule", PLEASE tell me if you have had this done. Does it hurt??????? I'm a big sissy about medical procedures and I'm really scared. Any info about how it is done and the pain involved would be wonderful!!!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry that this is so long, PLEASE HELP!!

Default Don't freak out yet!

I doubt he'd start cancer treatment before knowing whether you have it, so he must have given you the prescription for an "off-label" use. Maybe it helps loosen the nodule, or your blood, to make the biopsy easier. I wouldn't worry about that.

But if you still have concerns, make sure you ask him. Call his office if necessary. That's what they're there for.

I don't know anything much about thyroid biopsies. I hope everything works out fine.
