Hi, I just signed up to this site yesterday, and have already learned so much from all of you wonderful ladies. I am just wondering has anyone whom was just taking the glucophage had any changes. I am 33 and want a baby more than anything in this world. I am hoping the glucophage is my miracle pill because it is affordable, hence, I have no insurance. I am over weight so I am wondering if maybe my Doctor didn't prescribe the right amount for me. I have to take 2 500mg glucophage a day. I read someone elses post and she said her Dr. is having her take up to 2000mg a day. What is really sad, my Dr. didn't even tell me I had PCOS. She just asked me if I was trying to get pg. and I told her of course and she prescribed the glucophage, and referred me to an ob/gyn that is on the sliding fee scale for people w/ no insurance so he can prescribe the clomid. The reason I knew I had PCOS is because on the slip of paper w/ the diagnosis that you have to take to the receptionist on the "other" section she had written Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. So, I came home and started doing my own research. Should I make another appt. w/ her and see why she didn't mention to me anything about this disease? It seems to be very serious. Shouldn't I have an ultra sound to see if I have cysts on my ovaries? I got pregnant in 2001 (when I still had insurance) while I was going to an ob/gyn. He put me on the glucophage/clomid combo. He had ran all the tests. But he didn't tell me why I needed the glucophage. I sure wish there was something we could do to these Doctor's whom think it is okay to withhold such life altering information from there patients!! Good Luck to all and God Bless.
Arg! Doctors that don't tell patients what's wrong with them just irritate me to no end. Good thing you finally found out and came here though. This is the place to learn more about PCOS than your doctor will ever be able to tell you. Have a look around and especially check out the articles on PCOS. You will learn so much.
You might want to give the Gluc a chance to work all by itself, but I tell you right now it may take a while. Your hormones didn't get messed up in one month, they won't get fixed in one month. When I started Metformin (generic Gluc) I started my period again after a month, it took six month to ovulate and another two to get pregnant. But I didn't need the Clomid they had also thrown my way. I am doing so much better than before and I know a lot of it is the Met. A nice side effect is it will (most likely) help you lose weight too, which in turn may have a positive effect on getting pregnant.
Welcome to Soulcysters. Hope you like it here as much as I do.

Hello,
I just signed up to reply to this message - - ZACHSAUNTIE - I had the exact same experience - - my doctor however did mention PCOS and then said "so we are going to put you on this diabetic medicine - it should make it all better " - - - I just sat there confused and came home and searched the net and found this forum and thats been the bulk of my knowledge. So I have been on Met since April 14th - so about a week and a half. I have already been feeling a difference - let alone a loss of 9 lbs, that was nice - but also just feeling a little more entergetic - I am sure that the low carb diet is contributing largely to this.
I am also on 2 pills of 500 Mg a day - - I was also questioning why - but I havent had too many side effects so I am happy to be on a lower dose for now - I have another appt in 3 months and he mentioned raising the dose. I am also taking a Vitamin B complex - its great for overall feeling good and healthy - good to chat with you all!!
Thank You for sharing. I started on April 15th. So far I am happy with the dose. I hope you stick around, would love to go through this with you!! Hugs!!
CCcyster - welcome. Isn't it amazing how quickly you feel better once on Met? Are you also taking Iron in any form? Met depletes both B12 and iron in your body. For more information, check out the Metformin FAQ sticky in the Metformin forum.

Be encouraged and excited!! Now that you know about the pcos, and you have found this site... you are on a positative road to a better future!!! I, like you, am on a low dose of met. (since march) and have felt so much better. I'm also doing south beach (phase 1 - staying on that for a while). I feel like myself again after 4 years. My doc. is going to test me after 3 months of taking the met/gluchaphage. I'm impatient, as I want to be better today, right now, this minute!!
Words of encouragement: if you are feeling a little better each day, that's progress! Be ever happy that you know what is and has been wrong with your body! Take it a day at a time and know that knowlege is everything... and you have this wonderful site to educate you.
This site has given me so much insight and knowledge, I don't know what I would do without it! It's a nugget of gold at my fingertips.
Hugs and prayers to you!! A new day is dawning... and the sun is returning.
