Default Newbie question!! RE: Drinking situations

My first question!! Ok, I just got my BFP this morning. I know, I know... Humor me for a few minutes, I'm excited.

So my girlfriends are taking me out to dinner for my birthday tomorrow night. I need a good excuse why I am not drinking.

Thanks ladies, I can't wait to get to know you all!!

I usually say I'm on a new medication or antibiotics or antihistamines. The difficulties arise when I have to make excuses why I can't eat feta! Boy was that a hard one to explain away on Greek cooking girls' night.

Congratulations!

Medication is a good idea. If you're in more of a bar type situation (as opposed to dinner), just get sprite or tonic in a glass with lime, and no one will know the difference.

If they are your good girlfriends - tell them. Celebrate your birthday and your news. For me, I had been trying for quite a while so all my friends knew what was going on. The first event that we attended after I found out(which was about a week after I found out - so 5 weeks along) and didn't partake in a glass of wine, they knew exactly what was up. I figured should the unthinkable happen, I would turn to them for support anyway.

I'm all about faking them out. After they have a drink or 2 they won't notice anyway. Good luck!

I like the medication idea. I told all my friends right away because they knew what we were doing and I knew I would want there support if I had a m/c, but a little trickery will probably work if you are not comfortable with this. Or you could just go for the double celebration!

Well DH doesn't want me to tell yet. We are both very nervous because one of the girls just had a m/c at 9 weeks.

They all know that I have been seeing an RE, but they don't all know about the IUI.

Congratulations!!

1) As pp said, "I'm on a new medication and can't drink with it."
2) "I tied one on really big last night and am still a little hung over."
3) Since they know you are seeing an RE, "RE has recommended that I not drink while under treatment." - That does have a grain of truth to it - my RE recommended that I not drink more than 1-3 alcoholic beverages per week while TTC and up thru my IUI.

Ed. to add: I had a work happy hour just yesterday and not ready to spill the beans at work yet. Our group was in a room separate from the bar area, seated at a table and I figured they had a server waiting on them. But I went up to the bar, by myself, and ordered a cranberry/tonic. When I walked into the room with my colleagues, my boss was like, "Ooh, Jen, going straight for the hard liquor!" and I just smiled and said, "Well, I can't stay long so I didn't want to waste any time."

If you can order your drink off on your own where your girlfriends can't hear, you can do something like that to fake them out, but if it's a dinner situation, that wouldn't work.

I spoke to DH at lunch today and we talked about something like this. I think that is what we are going to do.

It's a dinner situation, but it's Hibachi. So there will be a lot going on, I don't think anyone will be too occupied with what I am drinking.

Thank you all for your suggestions and the congratulations!!

I always used the Metformin excuse in the beginning...my doctor really suggested not drinking while taking it anyways.
My birthday was 4 days after we got our bfp and we had plans to go out with friends and family. However, we ended up telling some of them...and I think by the end of the night most suspected it.

If it's hibachi, you could always try to claim you're saving your calories for the food. Or you have a big day at work tomorrow. Or the medication excuse. I like what a pp said about using the RE as an excuse...if you've gone out drinking with them before, you could always say that the RE busted you and told you to quit.

P.S. Congrats!!!

FYI...You CAN eat Feta, you just need to eat Pasturized cheese. In the US...it's more rare to find a cheese that isn't pasteurized, especially if you go to a chain store.

Athenos...I think that's the name, their Feta is pasteurized.

Nice to know! I wasn't sure of the source, though, so I couldn't be sure! I'll know to slyly check labels next time though. Hee hee.
