I was diagnosed with PCOS March 2008. Although it has been almost a year, I still feel completely new to this condition. I found this site last week by browsing and it has given me hope already. I thank you for this information!! ~Senobia
Many women with PCOS may also have insulin resistance and or metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance is a condition in which one's insulin levels are much higher than normal, although glucose levels will be normal. Insulin helps us to store nutrients. If your insulin levels are too high, it will be difficult to lose weight. Acanthosis nigricans, or dark leathery patches of skin on the neck folds, under the breast or arms or vulvar area can be a sign of insulin resistance. Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed by elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides and high BMI, waste circumferance, or waist hip ratio. Many ob gyns ignore insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Thorough evalulation of someone with PCOS requires ruling out these other syndromes. Treatment involves not only medical therapy, but nutritional counseling and exercise.
Thank you for all of the information. My PCOS was diagnosed in early 2008 which has left me with months of confusion and questions. I have tried numerous forums with no success rate to report. It appears the members of this forum are very supportive and knowledgable on the topic.
Thanks again!

Hello my name is Dawn and I live in Seattle. I found this site back on 5/12/08 and found so much stuff but then did not come back on.. Well I am back. I would like to say that I have PCOS and was diagnosised with it in 2008. Which really upsets me because I am now 34 yrs old. I have two children and got pregnant with both of them with out having a Menstrual.. so for all of you women out there.. just relax , live life and love.. I did not use any meds at that time because I did not know what I had. My daughters are 10 and 8 yrs old. I have all of the fun stuff that comes along with PCOS. Facial hair (which is the hardest for me ) skin tags, overweight , thining of hair , skinny legs and flater breast.. any ways. I just want to say Hello from Seattle . Pls find a Endocrine Dr. .. this is the only true Dr...that knows there business and see your other Dr... for other things.. but a Endo Dr... will get going in the right path..
I use
Metformin 500mg 1 in the morning
1 in the Afternoon
2 @ night.. a grand total of 2000
Spironolactione 25mg 3pills in the morning
3pills in the evening
Spiro blocks the male hormones so if you are planning to get pregnant then they will not put you on this. It has cause my dark patch on chin to lighten and the hair to go back to a fine feeling.
I hope this helps and hope to learn more about how to use this site.. .
this is so informative! I'm so excited that I decided to join and I'm hoping to have friends along my journey. Thank you thank you thank you!

Very interesting information.
I don't know if anyone else may be in the same boat, but they think I got PCOS from Depakote, which I was treated with at the age of about 13 for depression. I was also on Lamictal but I had never seen a link to that before.
If only they would figure this stuff out before they prescribe it!
