What an amazing site this is ? I don't know what to read first ! Much of it is hopeful and helpful I'm just stunned I didn't stumble across it sooner.
I'm an old, if not nieve hand at this, diagnosed in 1992, tried Dianette for a while (NEVER AGAIN! - I had some twisted form of PMT for months), had ovaries lazer drilled in '98, then clomid in '99 - finally ICSI in 2000, to no avail - then nothing ... My GP retired last year and when I met the new guy for results of a routine blood test he was "concerned" about my testosterone levels and tried to break it to me gently. Of course, I'm not surprised at all and remind him I've got PCOS (hasn't he read my notes?) and now he's the surprised one! "How is it being managed?" he asks ... "Managed? ... You mean this curse can be managed?" and straightaway the wheels started turning. I'm with an endocrinologist at a local hospital now and have been taking 500mg Metformin for a couple of months and got prescribed Vaniqua just yesterday. Compared with many my Metformin dose seems a bit low? Got an appointment tomorrow so I'll query that.
I've ticked a few other boxes, high BP, cholesterol and chalked up Type 2 Diabetes in March, last week the doc added fatty liver to the list, not to mention a gallstone and my hairline is receding marginally slower than my husbands but hey, still smiling
I've also got tales to tell about lazer hair removal, you know the ones and the constant losing battle with the bathroom scales, hopefully I'll fit right in.

Thanks for the welcome ladies. Mixed news from the hospital - Metformin is doubled to 1000mg a day and I'm to have a test for "Cushing's Syndrome" ... symptoms of which look way too familiar (identical to PCOS) - and it's very rare, I'm not convinced it's an issue but they've had half a gallon in blood tests lately, take some more, I'm easy - no harm in confirming it either way.
Cor, wouldn't it be rotten luck to have two conditions simultaneously that BOTH give you an Evans Storecard and a goatee ?
Oh yes, he "prescribed" power walking twice a day, now twice a week is fun, twice a day sounds like a lot - I'll give it a go (perhaps I'll do it instead of the washing up? Sounds like a plan)
I'm going to have a random mooch round some bios to get to know folk and pick up some tips to write my own.
Hi Eva - I'm not familiar with that condition - got lots to learn ... is it similar ?
I'm in a peculiar position being "forgotten" for 8years, it's almost like finding out for the first time again but without the shock. I see I'll be spending more hours in here tonight reading. Thanks for the good wishes
hey, welcome fellow newbie
I was wondering (as i have just been put on them) what if any other side effects you had when you took dianette?
thanks
Hello there , been a busy chick'n today so I'm late checking in.
Ooooo, Dianette, <sharp intake of breath thru pursed lips> it was a very very long time ago but I can remember this:-
<pause to check 3 pages of abbrevations>
Within a couple of weeks I didn't want to DTD - like seriously, couldn't bear thinking about it let alone doing it! The 'drive' totally vanished and after 6 months of abstinence (and in the interests of keeping my DH) I begged to be taken off them. But, ya know, everybody's different so it doesn't follow you'll be in the same boat.
Having said that I just don't think the prescription was right for me - it made no difference whatsoever with the hair, AF was regular but disappeared again when I stopped taking them, I didn't lose weight, didn't get PG (obviously) - they didn't work out for me. But, I gather they're a common treatment which suggests they work for the majority - good luck with it. Keep an eye on your BP though.
