Default Newbie, scared I DON'T have PCOS

Strange title huh?

Hi!

I'm so glad to found this site, I'm a 36yo mother of 1, I'm clinically obese, finding it very difficult to lose weight, my cycle ranges from 35 to 50 days with ovulation usually occuring but very late, I have a luteal phase of 10 days. The heavier I get, the longer my cycle gets. I get painful big zits on my face, and I've been convinced my hair has been thinning for about 10 years but put it down to my imagination after being somewhat dismissed by a doctor about 10 years ago! In my 20's my cycles were long and on occasion I'd actually skip a period, again my doctor put it down to stress or just 'one of those things'. I'm plagued with painful vaginal cysts which either have to be lanced or treated with antibiotics, I usually get them before my period.

So, last week I saw a different doctor I think very highly off. When I explained to him baout my long cycles and my inability to lose weight, he immediately mentioned PCOS and took a blood sample. I've to go back and see him next week for results and to discuss treatment, he mentioned metformin which will hopefully help with the weight loss and regulate my periods.

Now, though, I'm scared the blood test shows nothing!!! Know what I mean? It would be a relief to be dignosed with PCOS as that would explain why I'm so fat and why i can't lose weight, it's really getting me down. At the moment I'm on roughly 1800 cals a day just to keep my weight stable! If I go above that I put on weight so easily.

Oh, I've also developed very dry skin on my eye lids and I have seborrheic dermatitis on my already thinning scalp!

All the symptoms I have def seem to point to PCOS, but I'm terrified it's not!

Anyway, I'm please to meet you all. I'm in Scotland.

welcome to sc, from a fellow uk girl

I sooo know what you mean about getting diagnosed. Im getting a lap done next month to hope it shows endometriosis, and like you am worried it wont show anything.

anyway - i digress what id suggest is to write down everything that you want to ask/say to your dr so you dont forget. Thats what i always do. My blood tests show 'normal' but scan showed pcos. hope this helps

Thnaks for the welcome Eva. I think for me it's mainly a weight thing, when I was ttc with my son my cycles were between 30 and 35 days, I was a lot thinner then!! But the heavier I get the longer my cycles get, although I do seem to ovulate, I get the thermal shift. Can this be typical of PCOS? If I get my weight down I'm sure my cycles will regulate.

Hey SC,
I was diagnosed back in 1994 after not having a period for 11 consecutive months. Just curious, what type of doctor did you see that actually took an interest in your symptoms?

Hi Rhonda,

It was just my regular GP. I went to see him cause I want to lose weight and can't, and I ovulate very late in my cycle. Last cycle I ovulate on CD28. Over the years I've seen other GP's about thinning hair, irregualr periods and acne. He was the first to mention PCOS.
