I'm so glad that I came accross this WONDERFULL WEBSITE!!!!!!! I must say I don't think the doctors in SA so so clued up on PCOS - they do know a little but not much!! I couldn't get any website like this on the SAcan web and decided to go wider!!!
I've been diagnosed with PCOS & IR last year May 2005. I've been put on Glucophage (makes me feel very sick) and Ginette (bcp) to regulate my monthly's... I've always been a chubby child (but not overweight) - i loved eating.... as a teenager i wanted to loose some of my weight (babyfat my brother always use to tease me) and i didn't do it naturaly - instead i used diet stuff - the slimming mixture... I hardly ate anything and lost so much weight that some people thought i had anorexia!!! I kept the weight off while i was still using the slimming mixture for about 3 years and then all of a sudden my monthly's started to get irregular - with irregular i mean like be normal for a few months and then skip 1 month and be normal for 3 or 4 months and then skip a month. I only skipped one month at a time and not more. further i also got a lil bit sick b/c of the slimming mixture and my boyfriend at that time (now my husband) said i had to choose between him and the slimming mixture- and so i chose him and stopped using the slimming mixture... i started to pick up weight and i got a bit hairy! about 3 years back i went to my dr and told him that i'm a bit irregular and i'm struggling to loose weight and that i'm hairy so he referred me to a gynae. i made my appointment with her. she did all the questioning etc.. and eventually sent me for some bloodtests. and me as scared as i am of needles waited 2 years before i eventually went for the bloodtests - i can kick myself for that!!!!! so then i went back last year again and that was when i got the news i had PCOS and IR since then that i've been using the pill my hairiness dissapeared - i still have a little bit but its not excessive hairgrowth anymore!!!! i'm still struggling with my weight though - i can't get rid of eating something nice now and again. its so difficult to incorporate good habits!!!!! but i'm trying to get there... I lost 11kg with Weighless in less than a year ( i don't know how much pounds or lbs it is) up until we got married last year Sept since then i've picked 8kg's but i'm slowly but surely getting on the right track again b/c me and me hubby want to TTC!!!! I'm seeing my gynae next month again!!!!
sorry for this long story!!!! and thank you if you read the whole story!!!

Hi Ronel,
Welcome to SC! It's so nice to have a place to go where you are understood! I am the same way about needles/doctors! I too waited a long time after my period became irregular before I finally saw a dr. And that was only because I was bleeding so heavily (when I did have a period) that I had to use my son's diapers as a maxi pad! I'm glad you're seeing the dr. soon. Good luck with the weight loss, I'm working hard on it too!
You can email/pm me if you ever want to talk!
Jenny

Thanks everbody!!! It's REALLY comforting to know that there's other Cysters I/we can talk to who can understand what we are going through in certain stages in our life!!!
I agree! I was so happy when I found SC because here you're accepted even if you're fat, balding, and depressed! And where else could I go to talk about my period, discharge, etc.? Anyway welcome again and I'm here if you ever need to talk!
Jenny
