Post Newbie, starting the process...

Hi, all. I'm 28 and gradual hairloss over the past 3 years is what's led me to wanting to get tested for PCOS. I've always had a noticeable part (very dark hair, pale scalp), but the shedding (on the bathroom floor, in the shower, etc.) is a little above normal.

Last week I saw a Dermatologist and got a scalp biopsy - I'm still awaiting the results, but it was this particular dr. who recommended I get a workup with an Endo/gyn for PCOS. I've had acne since my teens - not super-horrible, but lately there's been a flareup along my jawline, and they seem deep (like cystic acne, maybe?). Wouldn't be surprised if I have increased androgens.

- never been on BCP
- have regular periods (only once did I get one way too soon (like 2 weeks early)
- have fought some sort of low-grade depression or BPD for the past several years, not on meds of any sort

I'm making appointments with endocrinologists and OB-GYN in the military system after the holiday...it's free for me to see people within the installation, so I'm starting there and getting outside referrals if necessary. I have no idea if I have PCOS, but after reading about it here, it seems increasingly common.

Hi welcome to SC. I hope everything works out for you. Are you military or is your husband? Just wondering. My husband is in the Marine Corps. I wanted to let you know it is also free to see doctors off base as well. Tricare covers it. Basically the only thing they don't cover is IVF and IUI. You just have to get a referal from your PCM.Thats what I have done. I have had terrible experiences with miltary doctors both as a spouse and as active duty. Again Good luck and if you ever need help or need to vent We are all here for you.

Default hi

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome. I'm active duty Army - stationed in VA. I may have to get outside referrals eventually (great that Tricare covers it) but I'm going with the military doctors for starters, just to see what they say. I know some of them aren't that knowledgeable, but there's actually a great hair specialist at one of the local installations, so that's who I went to first for the Derm biopsy.

I'm not married. I also never really intended on having kids - so I guess that part of PCOS doesn't seem that depressing right now. Not to make light of it, because I realize it's one of the most traumatic consequences of PCOS, and that a lot of women struggle with it...but I guess I've never seen myself as the 'mom' type - I can barely handle myself, much less a kid.

I am concerned about whether the cysts can lead to cancer, etc... I'll have to read more about that. This is all preliminary, though, because I have yet to be tested for it.
