Hey everyone, I'm new around here.. and to forums in general! Never know if I'm posting in the right place!!
Just thought I'd say hello and tell you about my introduction to the world of PCOS!
I was diagnosed a year and a half ago, never been put on any medication.. My main symptoms are non existent periods and being overweight!
I went to see my GP about my very irregular periods, she tested my hormone levels and suggested I may have PCOS- she seemed to know quite a lot about it and was very helpful! She wanted to put me on metformin (sp?) but suggested I go for an ultrasound and see a specialist to confirm the diagnosis. She sent me to see a man, and I have since found out he's supposedly one of the best specialists in the UK (I disagree!!) He was terrible to me, very patronising and said it's unlikely I had PCOS, I was just overweight (ignoring everything my GP tested) I had waited over three months for this appointment and was devastated that all he did was give me the same 10 minute lecture about being overweight- assuming it was solely because of a poor diet and no exercise.. didn't ask me anything, and then moved onto his next patient!
I was on the mini-pill (progesterone only) for about a year, but had to come off it because it was giving me bad stomach pains, I've been off the pill now for 10 months- I haven't had periods since!
Does anyone feel down about not having periods? People always say they wish they didn't have to have them, but it's making me feel non-feminine and I really wish I could have them again, just so I know my body is ok again..
I'm trying really hard to loose weight, I know it's important and also may bring on my periods again. I just wondered if anyone can tell me about an medications, are there any for bringing periods back? Or should I wait until I loose weight before asking my doc?? I have a feeling it may take a loong time! I'm in the UK by the way..
I just wanted to say that I started out like you. As a teen, my symptoms were overweight, no periods at all (unless medically induced) and some facial hair. Keep at it and try to go back to your GP, tell her what happened and see if she'll give you metformin. I'm taking it now and having my period on a regular basis.
Good luck

Thanks for replying! That sounds good, did you loose any weight too? I'm just worried she'll send me off to loose weight before taking me seriously like they all do! The original GP I saw who knew a lot about PCOS left the surgery, so I was quite upset about that! The specialist didn't think I needed to go on metformin because I had a glucose intolerance test and showed no signs! I think I might go and ask her though.. would love to get my periods back, no matter how crazy anyone says I am!! hehe
I must say I know exactly what you mean. I was just asked the other day about the last time I had my period because both of my friends had theirs at the same time. So, I counted on my fingers and it has been 10 months since my last "period". It was more of an emergency bleeding situation. Anyway, it does make me feel a little strange that I don't get my period, but then again I know that my body isn't normal and that I've got a lot of things going on but I know that I don't have my period because my doctor doesn't want me to have it. I also need to lose weight, and hopefully it will help. I've lost about 5 pounds in the last 3 weeks so hopefully it'll get better!
I totally know how u feel girl, so you're not alone
for about 2 years i had doctors telling me i was just over weight
and i agreed with them they all talk to me about
eating and exercising
so i did what they told me but nothing seemed to work it felt like
when i tried to loose weight i gained it instead
and then after having my perios for about 3 year ( a regular period for 3 years)
they skipped a few months then came back
i thought it was normal but apparently it wasnt
in july i went to the doctor
told her my problems and that i had one period since febuary
so she ran her tests and was very nice and called my mom personally to tell her
I had PCOS
she is very nice
however i am happy to say (srry if this is TMI) i got my second period since febuary this morning
Like most of you, I'm in that same situation.
I was really young when I started my period, I think I was 10(I didn't even know what it was when I started)
For the first two years that I had it, that was about as normal as I ever got. I think I was getting them about every 3 months.
Then when I was 14, I ended up having a period for two months straight(I would never wish this on anyone).
Then from November 2004-April 2006 I had no period at all. Then it would be off and on. I think in the last year and a half I've had about 5 periods. I've heard it all from your overweight and once you start losing weight your periods will come back. Well I tried that and that wasn't the case.
As crazy it sounds, I know what you mean cause I would kill to have my periods back and to be regular again. Its really frustrating. I've got a docotor's appointment on the 17th with my family doctor, so I'm hoping he'll put me on the Metformin.
