Newbie thinks these are some sensible books! Hello, newbie here!
Spent a couple of days in bookshops trying to find some useful books about PCOS and diet. Some books I found interesting:
These are all by Marilyn Glenville
Natural Alternatives to Dieting - includes sound advice on diet that doesn't rely on faddiness or special combinations
Natural Solutions to Infertility - includes a section on PCOS and again gives some good dietary advice as well as alternative health suggestions which I thought would be useful even if you aren't ttc.
The Nutritional Health Handbook for Women - a good book for any woman to own. Has good first chapters with advice for general good health (including diet) and chapters devoted to PCOS, overweight and infertility amongst other things. Well worth buying.
By Dr Andrew Weil:
Eating Well for Optimum Health
Not about PCOS at all, but has some very sensible advice about diet without promoting any "method" in particular. Recommends eating "good" carbohydrates (not low or no carbohydrates) and discusses all nutritional elements in a good (but not dull) amount of detail. An excellent read for those who like to know why! Very interesting section on carbohydrates explaining why the traditional low or no carb diets may be misguided in their reasoning. Dr Weil is a good writer who explains things mostly in laymans terms, yet doesn't treat his readers like idiots. I believe he also has a website drweil.com.
By Kaye Foster-Powell, Jenny Brand-Miller, Anthony Leeds and Stephen Colagiuri:
The Glucose Revolution series of books
I was initially suspicious of these because the authors' research was sponsored by the Sugar Association, and there is the suggestion that sugar isn't as bad as all that...! However, there are very useful glycaemic index lists in them and some good low glycaemic index recipes. The research makes for interesting reading too.
Hope somebody finds these useful! If anyone already has these books I would appreciate your opinion on them, particularly if you are an experienced cyster and know what is meant to work and what is not!
TIA
