Default Newbie with tons of research, but still have a few questions!

Hello all, I am a 24 year old newbie to the PCOS gang (diagnosed on August 24, 2009) after having a missing period for over a year. I have done tons of research on PCOS and think I have a good understanding of some things, but still a lil confused....any advice or feedback would be so appreciative..

Ok, so fiance and I have been thinking about starting a family in the next year to two, so I am trying to get my PCOS symptoms under control the best I can. I have been exercising for 2 months, at 3 times a week and just added an extra day, to bring me to 4x a week to try to help with some weight loss (down 20 pounds so far! ) and I recently went to an endo to talk about my options. He placed me on spiro for the excessive hair growth, but stated he did not want me to go on metformin nor a birth control if I was going to attempt to get pregnant in the next year or so. He also had me do fasting blood work and he stated that my fasting glucose level was 88.

My questions I guess now are
1. The endo stated since my fasting glucose was at 88, I am most likely not IR, but if over 70% of women with PCOS and significant weight gain like myself are, could he be mistaken?
2. Would going on Metformin or the pill help my ovulations become regulated to thus help me get pregannt in the next year or so? I sorta feel like I need to be on something to help get my baby making system back on track?

Any thoughts would be appreciative. I am so happy there is a place I can come to seek answers and support from women like me.

Thanks guys!!

Welcome Trickster! I too am new, although not so new to PCOS. I was diagnosed two and a half years ago (May 07), but the doctor who diagnosed me pieced it together by my testimony of the issues I had. She basically looked at me and said, ok you have PCOS, here's a prescription, here's the instructions & have a good day. I was floored. She did no testing whatsoever and I didn't feel comfortable with her diagnosis because of it. I let it go and never filled the prescription of Progesterone. 2.5 years later after no period still (the only period I've ever had was on BC and I stopped taking it nearly 3 years ago in January) my husband starts getting frustrated with me. He wants kids SOOOOO bad, I'm 26 and he's 24 and doesn't want to be 40 when we have our first child so he forced me to go to the doctor again. I was relieved when she asked more questions, did some actual testing and I was able to actually see the cysts on an ultrasound, I was saddened but satisfied, it sucks to know that the only thing you've ever wanted is being held hostage behind a locked door that says PCOS across it, I felt broken. But I do a lot of praying and I believe that God will answer my prayers.

So now I'm on the Progesterone, taking my BBT and doing a chart. I have IR and the weight around the middle area(if I lost 50lbs I would be where I should be), it's affecting my knees and my feet because I stand a lot at work and no amount of dieting is really helping me. I'm always tired and sluggish and the better I eat the more tired I feel. My eyesight is getting really bad too. Over the last year I've gone from seeing very clearly and never having glasses or contacts to, OMG what does that sign say?? Things are hazy and glare really easily too, it's awful! I did read some articles from a thread two days ago about Cinnamon and the assistance it gives to IR so I started that as well.

I'd be interested to see the answers you get to your questions as they are similar to mine.

Don't worry we'll all get through it!!

Well, thank you for the nice welcome Tiggersmom!

Yeah, I definitely understand your thought process. I had never really given the thought of children too much time, until I was told, "you may have an extremely difficult or may not at all at conceiving a child." Then, I was like, dang you body, this is my choice, not yours! I even had a not so sensitive person in my life say, "well, not all people were meant to have children." I was like, are you kidding? I'd probably love my child more because we women with PCOS know just how hard it was to get them here!

Have you tried an exercise program, Tiggers? I found that my 70+ pound weight gain has been added with the addition of some cardio. I have tried to eat smaller portions too, but I know how difficult it is. I do Jazzercise 9I know, so 1980s of me), but it has really helped me stay motivated at working out while not feeling ridiculously self conscious like at a gym, plus the people are all supportive. But, I have hit a plateau as of this week, so who knows.

Do you get your Cinammon at GNC? I have read about that too, so I thought maybe I should invest in it, let me know if you have any results. I read somwhere that Omega-3 or Fish Oil helps with ovulation too, so maybe I need to look further into that.

I do hope that someone can answer my questions as I love being as educated as possible.

I am just going to keep trying to lose some weight with good old endurance and positivity and try to find any chances to improve my ability to make a lil one for me and my love and I wish you luck in your journey as well

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP!
