I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 weeks ago and was prescribed metformin 500mg/day and spironolactone 25mg/day. I got sick of the hair growth everywhere and had been trying to conceive with no luck.
For now, i'm putting being a mom on hold and mainly trying to lose the weight and clear up my skin issues. i'm currently 5'4" and 226 lbs. ive been reading a lot about phentermine for weight loss. will metformin help significantly with the weight loss? Is 500mg metformin and 25mg spironolactone a high enough dosage to see results? Does it really help to "preserve fertility" as my nurse practitioner and ob/gyn stated? what is the best kind of doctor to go to for pcos treatment?
Also, i've been shaving to try and keep the facial hair to a minimum and i now have dark spots under my chin. I've been told that fade creams will make it worse. any suggestions for african american skin?
I'm new to the site and its been hard finding answers to my specific questions. Its just nice to finally have a diagnosis so that i know where to go and what questions to ask. Please help!!!!!!!

A good place to start is the stickies at the top of each forum. Another good place is the Research Articles Forum.

Your doctors are starting you on a low dose because of the side effects of Metformin. Usually after about 2 weeks of taking Met, your dose would be increased. Your best bet for your situation (PCOS + trying to conceive) is to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist. Check with your insurance to see if they require a referral. If they do, then ask your primary doctor for a referral to an RE.
Good luck and best wishes!
