Hi everyone,
I just registered today, but have been lurking on this site for a while. I am no stranger to pcos.
Just wanted your input. I am now 42. I have always had very thick strong hair, all the way up to age 35, when I first started to notice some very mild thinning. Nothing major, no one else told me they noticed. So, I did nothing.
Anywhow, since age 40 the thinning kind of started to get worse, I was under a lot of stress so I thought the increased shedding was due to stress. My weight had started to climb steadily too. In the last 7 months, there has been a marked HL, my part has widened and temples are thinning.
My bloods came back yesterday, and testosterone was 63 (range 14-76) and free test was 1.59 (range 0.10 - 0.85) This is obviously high. My other androgens ie DHEAS, 17 oh progesterone were all in the normal range).
My question is, for the HL, is it okay for me to just take a BCP like yasmin to bind the extra testosterone, or will I have to take an antiandrogen as well to see improvement in the hairloss?
Sorry this is a bit long.....I am at my wits end with worry about my hair. It is such a shock to me to be losing it, especially since this was the one symptom I have manged to dodge until the last couple of years.
Thanks for listening

You just answered your own question .. My endocrinologist told me with regards to my hair loss which is severe and I am 32 that you would need the BCP AND an anti androgen such as flutamide, propecia or spiro also to regrow hair any closing follicles use REgaine ...
Its highly traumatic this hair loss i know because for the last three years I have been traumatised and my self esteem is at the lowest it could ever get to ...
I am sorry yu are going through this too

It's so upsetting this hair thinning thing. I have found a solution in the mesh technique as practiced by Martin Malloy Cosmetic Hair Solutions. I've found it to be like a miracle!!
I didnt know that you loss hair from pcos. I have always had excess facial hair but have recently started lossing hair especially around my temples. Could you tell me more about it?

That is where my hair loss is most severe also and I am now receeding at teh hairline and have diffuse shedding ..
the androgens that cause increased male pattern hair growht on the face and body are responsible for the hair loss on your head. . whilst the hairs on my head are turning vellus (blond and useless) whilst the hairs on my body are turning terminal (black adn course) PCOS is such a B*tch I hate it so much

My hair loss is my most difficult symptom to deal with, along with the weight issues.
I have tried BCP, Metformin, Spironolactone and now Flutamide. Flutamide is the only medication that has stopped my hair loss.
My body does best when my testosterone levels are around 20. It was 119 when I was first diagnosed. Metformin brought it down, but didn't help the hair loss.
