Hi everyone, my name is Rebecca. I am 29 years old and was diagnosed last week, but I pretty much knew I had pcos since I was about 25. My husband and I have just started trying for a baby and that is when I got my official diagnosis.
I have all the symptoms... Hair loss, acne, weight problems (have been around 180 lbs since high school) and now I know that I am not ovulating. This is a very frustrating condition.
A few ?s.
Due to another medical condition, i cannot take metformin/glucophage. Dr said diet(south beach/low carb) and daily exercise will work the same. Does anyone know if this is true?
I was put on clomid last week. Will it work as well without the metformin? Anyone take just clomid without the other?
When I get my insulin levels down (they are running 20.8 fasting now, glucose around 80) will symtpoms inprove?
Does pcos affect blood pressure and cholesterol? Mine both are slightly high.
Thanks so much for listening! It is so nice to have a place to vent, ask questions and be around people in the same boat. The more I read on here, the more I know its not me. I used to think i had no willpower to lose weight, and embarrased by the oily skin and breakouts. Its nice to know there is a reason and its managable.

Welcome to sc! I'm newly diagnosed too and my dr put me on clomid only too. He said he wanted to see how I reacted to that before he added anything else to the mix. If we hadn't been ttc for a while now, he may have tried met first, but apparently felt clomid was likely to give me faster results. I O, but I just don't O very strong or early enough in my cycle.
I have a friend who never O'd but started too on 100mg of clomid. From what I've gathered each woman's body reacts differently to each level sort of like the goldilocks issue... it's just figuring out what level and what combo of meds is going to get things to happen just right.
I hear getting insulin levels down and improving health can make the symptoms of pcos disappear completely for some. It seems to range widely from person to person. But it's certainly worth the try!

I am a firm believer in the wonders of Met. I could not loose weight alone, without it. I tried for years with no success. The Met changed my life. Also, I am believer in Met in combo with Clomid for PCOS'ers. I did not respond near as well to Clomid without Met, as I did when the Met kicked in. Met has changed my life and I love it. ~Misty

Hello and welcome. I can't answer your questions about Clomid, but here are the others.
Yes, the low carb diet and exercise can work. Just expect it to take longer than it would for most women.
Yes, improving your fasting insulin should improve your symptoms, especially the symptoms related to the skin.
Yes, PCOS can cause elevated BP and cholesterol, especially higher triglycerides.
Since you are TTC, you should be taking a good prenatal vitamin, which will help symptoms too. Good luck. I wish you all the best.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome. Many women here have had success in losing weight/lowering fasting insulin with low carb dieting, i'm just getting on the bandwagon myself, so hoping it helps. I'm not ttc, so don't know anything about clomid, but you may find more answers in the ttc boards. Good luck to you!
