I was just diagnosed with having TSH level of 12 and just wondering if this affects my cycle at all or chances of conceiving? I will begin thyroxin tomorrow has this helped anyone else? I'm just confused about this whole scenario. I never would have thought bout anything like this. Any answers would be great. Thanks*

Yes, hypothyroidism can affect both your cycle and your chances of conceiving. Usually, it can cause you to skip periods. You'll want to get your TSH to about 1.0 for optimal chances of conception (this is going to take you at least a few months and possibly as long as a year or so). Being on meds should increase your energy, help if you have dry skin, and help with weightloss and energy issues if you have any.
Try not to get a generic medicine since the dosage is not accurate from month-to-month. Also, always take it at the same time every morning at least 1 hour before you eat. You should only take it with water and not with any other meds or vitamins of any kind.
Best wishes.

I don't understand why mine is 12 and how I would get it to 1.0? So basically I would be going down in numbers? If so I have long way to go. Also how do I know if I will have generic brand or not of thyroxin?

Think of golf when you think of TSH...lower is better. You lower your TSH by taking the correct dose of thyroid hormone replacement (Synthroid, etc). It can sometimes take a few months to a year to get the dose just right, so don't be frustrated if you don't feel better immdiately. It can take several tries to get the dose just right. As Lynn mentioned, it's best to not get generics. The dose is not always consistent. You'll know if t's generic by looking at the bottle, should say generic for ___________. Or ask your pharmacist. You can also ask your endocrinologist to write the Rx for "dispense as written" so you won't get a generic.
Good luck,
Cynthia

It may take a little while to get your thyroid levels where they need to be but it will happen. When I really started getting serious about my thyroid health, my TSH was >150! It was through the roof and I felt terrible. That was August 07, last time I went to the doc was Jan. 08 and I have made it to 7.08, so it didn't take too long but it is different with every person. I also walk a mile every week day....kind of don't do it on the weekends I personally think the walking is helping....but I could be wrong, just a suggestion. My doc also recommends staying away from generic and that my TSH be 1.0 to activel TTC. Good luck, be positive, and keep us posted!!!
