Default newly diagnosed

Ahh finally found the uk posts.

I was diagnosed with pcos this morning after having blood tests and an ultrasound.
I know I have insulin resistance because I had high insulin levels found after a fasting blood test in 2005.

The doctor never told me if I could take anything to help me lose weight. But I have read online about different things to help with the insulin resistance which can help u lose weight.

Do you guys think I should go back to my doc and explain this to her?

Helps you lose weight and bring periods back. My friend is taking it and her periods have started (she didn't have one for a yr). Her doc wouldn't prescribe it until she's seen a specialist 1st though. My doctor won't prescribe me clomid either. Got to see a gynaecologist to get it

It is supposed to help lose weight but I've been on it for over 4 years and nothing. I've made some of my own decisions based on a lot of info on this site and let's just say I've now lost a bit of weight and had a period!! Metformin wasn't working for me and I chose on my own to go off it. I don't recommend to anyone to do this as this was my own personal thing coupled with the frustrations of my doctors.

Mmmmm I can't see how it makes you lose weight either but apparently its meant to. Its a diabetic drug isn't it?? so I think it tackles the insulin issue which then brings your periods back?!?! I'm not sure I'm no expert!! I'm only going by what the doc told my friend....although she hasn't lost any weight either!!!!! CHarming!!!

I think everyone is different. I was put on the metformin years ago when I was in the states and after 6 months the doctor could see it was doing nothing for me so she took me off it. When I moved over here I then got referred to a fertility specialist who is a pain in the butt and I can't stand him. He refused to listen to my past history and put me on it again and won't change the dosage or anything. He actually acts like he can't be bothered. For me I am starting to go the homeopathic way with herbs and vitamins. Since I started that, I lost 10 pounds and had a period! But again, I wouldn't recommend anyone doing it as this was my own persoanl decision. There are so many women on here and all of them are entirely different though we all have PCOS.

Yes definately I've heard that acupuncture is good too. It's very early days for me so I think that is a route I will go down if the medication I get from the doc doesn't work

Metformin alone is unlikely to do the trick but in combination with Low GI eating, lots of excerise it can def help with weightloss as it helps to regulate your insuline levels. My dietican (Dalene Rottier, London Endocrine Clinic) described PCOS as a chair with four legs 1) Metformin 2) LOW GI eating 3) Excerise and 4) Sleep and stress management. Now what happens if one leg is missing? The chair becomes unstable and that is the same with your PCOS, all four needs to be managed and worked on at the same time.
So, metformin on its own is unlikely to do the job. I have been on metformin for 6 months now and have come off Dianette, since then I have had cycles like clock work every 32 days. I have lost 8kg (but over 6 months mind) and have another 5kg to go. Its a struggle but Im getting there.
So in short, there is no wonder drug out there, its a combination of life style choices and it is an every day battle. But if you are prepared to do the work, you will eventually see results. Please see the website Diagnose me first for more info on Low GI and contact details to the wonderful team that I have had so much help from.
