Hi all,
I’m new here to this forum and just diagnosed with PCOS. I have a few questions. I posted yesterday, but didn’t get any responses…I think the length of my post may have been a little overwhelming! J So I’m going to get straight to the questions and am hopefully posting in the forums where they can best be answered. If you want to see a little of my history, here’s the link to my original post:Just started Metformin and have questions
I started metformin Tuesday evening before dinner. Dosage: 500mg 1X day for 7 days, then 2X day thereafter. Fortunately I have had no ill effects after three doses and have already lost two pounds, but we’ll see what happens when I up the dose…
Question: My doc diagnosed w/o doing any blood tests. I’m okay with this because I have been totally dismissed by Dr.’s for several years. I'm just happy that someone finally took my symptoms seriously! But does this seem odd? Has anyone else been diagnosed with no blood test?
When I asked why no blood test she said that it wouldn’t matter what the results are, her course of treatment for me would be the same. I’m TTC also, I think this may be her primary focus and she said metformin will help both PCOS and TTC.
Any responses are appreciated!
I was diagnosed yesterday and she did tell me the verdict before testing me. We are also trying to have our first child. I went to see a RE. She then did all the blood tests and ultrasound. She started me on Provera today, then iI will see what happens. I have not had my glucose tst results yet so no Metformin so far. She explained that it has been proven to affect fertility. I will keep you posted.

No clomid, just the metformin. She gave me two refills (three months worth) and I'm supposed to go back if I still have problems. I think that will probably be the next step.
Maybe she is trying to trigger your periods with Metformin. I have read that sometimes with diet, exercise and Met you can get your periods again. In my case if i am not on birth control pill i have nothing at all and for months. Will this be your first child?

Thanks for your responses! Yes, I am trying for my first child. I actually DO have somewhat regular periods but no ovulation. Before BCP my cycles were 35-42 days. Since being off the pill cycles have been 27-28 but with no ovulation. Weird!!!
That would maybe explained why your doc is first trying with Met to see if the estra boost will induce an ovulation. Do you keep a basal temp. chart? I had done that on my own and you could tell that nothing was happening there.

No I haven't done the BBT. I wasn't getting the cervical fluid to indicate I was ovulating. I was getting almost NOTHING, and it was very random, very thick when I did get. Dr. agreed that I probably have not been ovualting.
Hi Molly-
A couple things. Yes, I think most docs do bloodwork. Kat just posted this and it talks about the various tests they do. My RE tested my LH, FSH, TSH, and prolactin. Understanding Tests and Hormone Levels for PCOS
There are various opinions about what drug should be tried first. The latest article says clomid first but there is research out there to support the use of met, so I don't thing your doc was far off in starting you on that. There are a ton of successful pregnancy stories on this thread: Metformin Success Stories
And this is a thread with lots of articles about met. Scroll down to #6 which is about ovulation and has articles that could answer your question specifically. FAQ About Metformin
There really is no easy answer since all of our bodies are so different. Just educate yourself and read up on it! Good luck!
Check out the ttc buddies section and I believe there's a group for ttc with metformin.

You should not be diagnosed with pcos without tests...your doctor should have first ruled out things like Cushing's (which has symptoms very similar to pcos).
I would think your doc would eventually do tests. My doctor first diagnosed me based on my history then did some lab tests.
Researching all you can is the best way to understanding this. I'd learn what you can and next time you see your doctor, go in with a list of questions, let them know what you've learned and don't leave until your questions are answered! lol I totally understand though, because I was blown off by many many doctors for years before I found my doctor who finally gave me a diagnosis and didn't tell me it was all in my head. I cried about the diagnosis but was so happy to finally have a name to it so I could find things out. I'm glad you at least have a doctor who is taking you seriously, but definitely get some bloodwork done.
Good luck and welcome to S/C!! It's a great place!
