Hey there. I was just diagnosed with PCOS last week. Did all the labs and turns out my testosterone and DHEA are high, everything else was normal, including my insulin. The dr. says because of my rapid weight gain, irregular and AO periods I do indeed have PCOS. I was well-prepared as I thought she was say that. I had already been to a nutritionist and am now eating frequently throughout the day and started exercising more regulalry to lose the weight I put on. She suggested Metformin as well as clomid therapy, saying the metformin may be helpful. I declined using it right now since I'm not insulin resistant. Was this a mistake? Should I take Metformin after all? Someone said it really helps aid in the weight loss. BTW...I've never had a weight problem until last sept. when it just appeared out of nowhere! I've always been healthy and ate well. It's very scary...anyone else have this happen?
Hi Rachel: You may want to consider going on Met -- a lot of us cysters (myself included) are not insulin-resistant, but Met has helped us gain somewhat more regular cycles. It helps some people lose weight; others it doesn't help in this area. I would suggest just reading everything here on SC -- that will at least give you some good information to think about in order to make the decision. Good Luck and post again if you need to!

Hi and welcome to SC. This place is great. I was diagnosed in 11/04 and started Metformin right away. It helped me regulate my periods and helped me lost weight and keep it off. It may be a pain to deal with at first, I had a few side effects that weren't so pleasant, but once your body gets used to it, it has been wonderful. I am also not insulin resistant. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Don't worry your not alone in this. See ya around!

Keep positive thoughts because your mind is stronger at healing than any medication you can take. Believe in yourself to heal and you will start seeing a difference.
to SC Rachel! I would have to agree with the others - you may want to consider taking Met for assisting in AF regulation. Also, Met in combination with a low carb diet has really helped women to loose weight as well.
Hope to see ya around the board - so keep posting!
I know how scary it can be - I've only been diagnosed a few months myself. But keep asking questions (and going to new doctors if you aren't happy with the one you've got and can go to new ones) and arm yourself with information.
I personally am not on any medication (except BCP) and have lost 12kg (26.4lbs) just by eating right and exercising regularly. The BCP is helping me with regulating AF for now. My doc wanted to try to get me losing weight "on my own" for six months before considering any further medication.
YES!!! Please consider getting on Metformin...it is used even if you arent insulin resistant. My labwork said I wasnt IR but that medicine sure did help me to lose weight and get my periods back. Plus, I couldnt even gain weight back because I tried(for metabolism boost, I hit a weight loss plateau). I hope you do change your mind!

Thanks for all the really good advice. I think I'll call my dr. and ask to do the metformin. I guess I've always been one to try things the natural way before turning to drugs. I don't have a lot of weight to lose, and thought the metformin wouldn't be so necessary in my case, but you guys who've been through this know the best. Thank you!!
I think if you are TTC that Metformin is a great choice. I to have just been told I have PCOS and have started metformin. I have used the insuline resisitant diet and i did get my period back for a month, you may not be dieabetic but PCOS is a insuline resistant diease so a blood sugar med is the best. You can also try a vitiam that is all natural know as Glucabetic...it isn't as strong as the met. but used along with the diet can really do wonders.
