Hi!!! I am new to this site and COMPLETELY CONFUSED on how to get around the site but I am trying to figure it out. If anyone has any tips to make it easier I would greatly appreciate it!!! Anyway, I am 25, married 3 years, my husband is 30. I am 5'7, 130 lbs. This is the someqhat quick version of my story. I had been on BCP for several years with still somewhat irregular cycles, but they were present. I stopped the pills twice and both times my cycles stopped completely. I didn't really care because I wasn't TTC and the thought of not having to worry about AF every month was great!!!! My DH and I decided to start TTC in October 2007 so my OB told me to stop my pills in September....WELL....4 months went by and NOTHING happened! No cycles, no ovulating (I tried the kits to test and charted my temp), needless to say no pregnancy. My OB tested my horomones but they came back normal so his solution was to tell me all the fertility options I had, which overwhelmed me, and scared me off. My DH and I decided we would just keep TTC, praying things would change. I asked the OB what was wrong and his answer was "These things just happen sometimes." Not an answer I liked! In July, my PC doctor moved so I got a new doctor. My new doctor was very concerned that I STILL had not had a cycle since October. She didn't like that my OB didnt have a reason for my situation so she had me see an ENDO. She also started me on Lexapro (which as been a lifesaver) because all the stress from this situation had me about to lose my mind!!! I met with the ENDO in August. I went through all my symptoms with her and she was VERY confused, so she ran a multitude of blood tests. Everything came back normal except my LH/FSH ratio, which she informed me could be a sign of PCOS. She sent me to have an ultrasound done and the ultrasound did indeed show that I have PCOS, which surprised her because I am thin. My husband and I want to wait to TTC till next year, so in the mean time, my ENDO has me taking Provera every 3 months so that I will have a cycle. I also switched my OB because I wanted someone more aggresive. I visit my new OB (a female) in January and my DH and I want to start TTC in February. I am SOOOO nervous and SOOOO scared so I am glad to know I can come on here and chat it out with people in the same boat as me! My sister and all my friends have kids and most of them were OOPSES.....guess I wont ever know what that is like! Nobody really understands and my DH is as supportive as possible but this site seems to be the outlet that will help!!!
My Endo seems to think that since I am not IR, I should respond very nicely to Clomid. I am not getting my hopes up! I am going to try to take things one day at a time but this website definately gives me hope!
I am hoping that through this website I will get to know some people who are going through the same thing! I am also really happy I have somewhere to go to vent when it seems like nobody understands!!!
tnickels - has your doctor talked to you about metformin? Some PCOS women will regulate after being on that for awhile. It would be good to read the post from Kat at the top of the thin cysters threads. Although Clomid works for many, I think with thin cysters the response is much less. I know 2 other thin women with PCOS as well as myself that had no repsonse to Clomid - nothing. But with other treatments (Letrozol, Bravelle) the responses are much better - for thin PCOS. Anyway, check the study out. If you can't find it let me know. And welcome!
Thank you so much! I will definately look into it! I will let you know if I have any problems finding it!!!! I actually am a drug rep and sell diabetes meds and ALL my coworkers keep telling me I should try metformin. I am meeting with my new OBGYN in January and hoping that by then, I will have enough info to bring with me. I am hoping she is aggresive!!!

Reason: new info
Yeah another newbie! Hi nickels! I'm also new to this site and trying to manuever my way around...Your story is very similiar to my situation. I'm 29, 5'4 125lbs. and have been married for 2 yrs. I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago by my RE...funny how you go your whole life with irratic, irregular cycles and then you see the right dr and they diagnose you within hours! I've also always had irregular periods, which is why i started on BCP just to regulate my cycle and cramps. Went off last Dec and have been ttc since May. Didn't get AF for 4 months so my dr presecribed prog and 50 clomid which didn't work so referred me to an RE. She diagnosed me with PCOS after u/s. I passed the gluc test (no ir) and I'm now taking progesterone and then will start 100mg clomid cd 3-7...I know exactly how you feel with friends and family pg within weeks of ttc!!! sigh...my best friend just got pg last month after 1st month of ttc. My sister-in-law has just started ttc this month so I'm sure she'll be next. It's really nice to find others out there who are going through similiar hardships...we're not alone!
HEY ALL!! I was just diagnosed with PCOS in June 2008. So fairly new diagnosed, but completely new to soulcysters!! I have been married for over a year to my wonderful hubby and we began ttc in Oct 07, after I quit YAZ. Well, I would have my cycles on my own, but about June they stopped, I went to an RE and found out PCOS right away (later confirmed through bloodwork). My LH/FSH ratio is 2:1. I was checked, but don't have insulin resistance, so that's good news! I'm maybe like 5lbs overweight, nothing really. I'm still relatively small. I have had an SIS (ow!) and my insides were in good shape. I was on Femara 5mg for cd 3-7 of this cycle, but it failed to produce a mature follicle on cd 14. So, I will start my prometrium (3rd cycle using it) tonight so I can start Clomid 50mg cd 5-9. Soooo much to keep track of!! haha. I'm really looking forward to getting to know people with the same story and people with different stories. Really, who ever thought that PCOS is THAT common!?!? Baby Dust to all the cysters!!

Hello everyone,
I am new to this site, and i am very confused about my diagnosis and treatment. Me and my husband were married 2 years ago in 2006. We never tried aggressively to conceive, however thought it would just happen. Last year, i went to a fertility specialist (just by chance) and my FSH/LH ratio seemed to be off. Moreover i have polycystic ovaries. So she diagnosed me with PCOS. My periods have always been regular. I dont have any other symptoms either. I was not too convinced with the diagnosis. I started charting my BBT. I do ovulate on my own almost every month. I am very thin though currently, as i reduced around 15 lbs after my marriage out of no special reason. Anyways, i went to another doctor, who completely ruled out PCOS. My LH FSH were also normal. Then i moved to another city, and went to another fertility specialist, who ran the tests again. Again the LH/FSH ratio seemed to be off. But the dr. said she cannot diagnose me with PCOS with complete certainty, however, she would remain suspicious of it. She put me on clomid 50 mg. I ovulate fine with it ( as i do even without it) But i am not getting pregnant....... Can anyone give me any advice what to do? I feel quite over whelmed. There might be a problem with me, as to why the LJH and FSH level come to be off sometimes...however, i feel the doctors are not getting to the right diagnosis, if there is any. I would really appreciate any advice.
Thanks a lot.

tnickels,
I am also 25 and recently diagnosed with PCOS, though, I plan to get a second opinion. My husband, 28, and I have been ttc for the past year without success. I have always had irregular periods, about 4-5 periods a year and I have never thought much about it until now. I have taken birth control pills in the past to regulate my periods, which seems to be most doctors answer to irregular cycles. I have been off birth control pills for several years. Now that I am ttc, I went to OBGYN looking for an answer. After completing a physical exam, blood work and an ultrasound, I found out that I have a 2:1 LH/FSH ratio, a sign of PCOS. However, unlike your ultrasound, which indicted PCOS, my ultrasound only showed two small cysts on my right ovary. I have had acne since I was a teenager. Though I still have outbreaks, it has gotten better. I am not IR, nor am I overweight (5'8 and 130 pounds). I am hesitate to believe the diagnosis and will seek a second opinion.
My OB's answer was to put me on birth control pills to see if that will jump start my period. Have anyone heard of this before??? Can you take Clomid when you have cysts on your ovaries or is there a greater risk of hypersimulation? Any ideas why my doctor would suggest this method of approach?
I haven't taken the bbc pills, because I really wanted to observe my fertility signs first and get a second opinion, before I alter my hormones with pills. I have been charting my basal body temp for the past month and my temps are really low in the 96 range. Has anyone with PCOS charted their temps??? I am scared to go to a RE, because of the cost that might be associated.
Since your situation seems most similar to mine, would you mind keeping me updated on your progress with Clomid?
I've had PCOS for 10 years now and the most frustrating thing has been the fact that all of my doctors would say "your ovaries are clearly showing that you have PCOS, but you're too thin to fit the mold, we won't worry about it for now". Besides BC, none of them ever talked to me about going on Met or doing anything differently.
Well, now I'm 28 and the symptoms of PCOS are showing loud and clear. I have hair growing like crazy (everywhere I don't want it), I'm sluggish and am always having cramping problems, and have put 10 pounds on in the past 3 months (when you're only 5 feet tall 10 pounds is a lot). It's disgusting.
Now that I'm finally "looking" like I should have PCOS, I've gotten my Dr. to put me on Met and I'm really happy. But part of me is pissed that I had to wait this long. I'm mostly upset about the excess weight because I'm incredibly active but have always struggled to keep my weight down. Now that I'm not training for marathons and cross-state bike rides I'm getting fatter by the second.
...okay, I'm ranting. Sorry, it's just so frustrating.
My point is that even if you're a 'thin' cyster please don't let the doctors brush you off. It will catch up to you and isn't fun.

I can't believe how similar our stories are!!! I've been looking around this site alot recently, trying to understand the PCOS diagnostic the fertility specialist gave me last week. I just felt I didn't fit the model at all...sure, I haven't had a period in 9 months, (after stopping BCP, and 5 monts before getting on BCP), but I'm thin and athletic (5'5, 130-135 lbs, which I've noticed is a very common height and weight on this forum!) and I don't have acne (and never have, even as a teenager), nor excess facial hair, and my glucose tests are normal and have always been. The fertility Dr diagnosed me based on the new Rotterdam criteria; an ultrasound showed cysts on my ovaries, and I'm not ovulating. But every thing else is normal, and all the research I've done talks about excess androgens, excess weight, diabetes, IR...I was beginning to seriously doubt my diagnosis.
It is such a relief to see that other women have a similar profile than mine.
I have also started provera this morning, and will take serophene (like clomid, but different brand) very soon to see how I react first, then it TTC for us! I hope!!!
In the last week I have gone through fits of tears, confusion, anger, frustration and denial. I'm not sure how I am feeling today. One thing I am realising is, like you, that I have to mourn the loss of a "spontaneous" pregnancy, a happy surprise "out of the blue" that was hope for but not planned and controled, the way it will be now that I will be taking serophene.
I an new here and i wasn't diagnosed yet...the only thingi have is an lh"fsh ratio of 2:1. I am not overweight, no hirutism, no acne, i get periods every month..they come at different times ranging from 23-32 days but i get them every month.
I did charting and my temps did go up after ovulation..i also did an opk that came out positive...my doc said this is enough to confim ovulation..but i also have a progesterone test due in 2 weeks..will this confirm if i ovulated or not?
if i am getting periods every month...for like 5 days and assuming i am ovulating..do i sitll need to get on met or clomid to get pregnant? what r my chances to get pregnant..we just started to ttc last month..thanks!

Hi wantababy786,
I am not a doctor or expert on the subject, but I have read a lot of books since my diagnosis. I am not sure if a 2:1 LH:FSH ratio is enough to diagnosis someone. That being said, if you observe a temperature spike, your temperature stays high for approximately 2 weeks and then you get your period this means that you have ovulated. If it stays high for more than 18 days, it likely means that you are pregnant. The OPK can register false positives when you have a 2:1 ratio, because it is measuring the amount of LH, which noramlly spikes right before you ovulate causing the egg to burst from the follicle. However, if you have a high LH level constantly, OPK will give you false positives. Although the OPK kit could be wrong, if you have regular periods and observe consistant temperature spikes, I don't see why you should have a problem conceiving due to PCOS. 2:1 LH:FSH ratio indicates that you are not experiencing the normal LH surge to cause regular periods. If you are experiencing monthyl periods that you can attribute to ovualtion, then the egg is there every month to be fertilized and you just have to time intercourse correctly. I suggest that you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It has a lot of useful information regarding how to oberve your fertile days. As long as you observe a temperature spike, good cervical mucus and time intercourse appropiately, I think PCOS and ferility drugs (Clomid) should not be needed. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Sarah
Hello! I am also new here and newly diagnosed. Here is my story: I am 5'6" and 130 lbs. I was put on birth control when I was a teenager and don't really remember what my periods where like before that. I stopped the pill in January of 2008. The DH and I TTC starting in June 2008. In November 2008, I was diagnosis with PCOS. I was having irregular periods, of which 60 days or so apart. So when I realized this, I was wondering if I was ovulating with so much time in between cycles. I went to an OB and they did some blood work, come to find out my LH levels are higher than my FSH. They suggested PCOS. Other than the irregular cycles, I do not have any of the other symptoms; I do not have acne, body hair or extra weight, so I wasn’t quite believing her when she suggested PCOS. So I went in to my family doctor to talk it over and possibly to get a referral for a fertility specialist if indeed PCOS was the case, during that visit I had an ultra sound and discover both ovaries are enlarged and multiple cysts in each ovary. As of yesterday, we are still being refused a referral to a specialist because we have not been ttc for a year. But she did put me on metformin. So were I am unsure is the fact that my cycles are so irregular, how can I tell if I am ovulating. With my LH levels higher than my FSH how will an ovulation test kit be accurate? My temp is always different and never consistent. Do I trust a family doctor's opinion over a specialist on this matter? Thanks!

Hi Athletic Cyster,
I just read your post to this question and I am worried!! I just got diagnosed 2 days ago with pcod and I am thin. I only got diagnosed by the pain from cysts. But I have a similar body type to this original poster. My doctor told me as long as I stay on b.c. (except when prego and ttc) I won't have symptoms get worse or appear. My question for you is: were you on a supressive med l(ike bc) when your symptoms increased/appreared? This is one of the biggest questions I have right now about POCD!!!! Thanks!
