Hi everyone! I was recently diagnosed as having PCOS. My symptoms are pretty typical or so I'm finding out with research. I'm overweight (mainly around my midsection), I have skin tags, no menstrual cycles, and of course I'm just about as hairy as a man which I hate! I'm so self conscious when people (especially men) just look at me, let alone talk to me! I'm fair skinned and my hair is thick, dark, and course. I'm sure it's very noticeable to everyone, but I don't dare ask to find out for sure. Do you think your excess hair (even when shaven) is noticeable to others?
When I was diagnosed with PCOS my doctor put me on Metformin right away. I've been on it for about 3 weeks now and I hate it! I know that it can cause 'bowel' issues and I'm experiencing this right now. It seems like no matter what I eat or drink within an hour or so I'm running to bathroom. I'm at the point right now where my bum hurts so I don't even want to go anymore! Sorry, it's TMI I know, but I need to make sure this is normal. Is it normal to have to go this often while taking Met? Will it get better with time or will my life continue this way forever?
Lastly, how long does it normally take to get your first menstrual cycle? I'm 27 years old and I can't remember my last period. It's certainly been well over a year I know that for sure. I'm not looking forward to getting it back, but know it's necessary.
Any other info you can give me as a newly diagnosed girl trying to adjust to meds and just trying to cope with this ugly, degrading disease feel free!
welcome to sc so sorry that the met is driving you mad right now. I find that as long as i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss - and always eat with the met i am ok with it.
eva
I agree with Eva. Avoiding sugary/fatty/ high carb foods will help. And the metformin does make many people sick for awhile. it did me for about a month but now I have almost no side effects. I'd stick with it if you can. If it keeps being that bad, maybe look into metformin extended release and then ask your doctor about it. I heard it helps people pretty much the same way regular met does, but without all the nasty side effects. Though I haven't done the E/R, my body eventually adjusted to the regular met.
Good luck! And welcome to S/C!!

Thanks ladies. I felt better today. I've been cutting down my sode intake. Soda has been my weakness for years! I'd have several cans a day. I dream of being to drop it completely, but it's so hard! Right now I'm happy to say that I'm down to at least 1 can a day. I think it's finally catching up to me. I didn't have the extreme urgency to go at all today which is good.
What about my menstrual cycle? I'm sure it's different for everyone, but should I get it within the first month of being on Met or does it normally take longer?
I plan on sticking it out with. I'm hoping it'll help me get my body back on track and to also help me lose some weight. I'm 5' even and weith 240lb. My knees are bad from having to carry this extra baggage around for so long. I need to make some changes and fast!
How long it takes you to get AF will differ for each person. I haven't had AF on it yet, I've had to take provera to bring AF on, after negative pg tests. So there's not a definite answer, unfortunately. Hopefully, you'll O on only Met and you'll get regular cycles on your own right away.
