Cool Newly diagnosed and totally stressed!

Hi everyone! The name's Kaylee, I'm 21 and have been suffering from PCOS since puberty. I finally got a diagnosis from an endocrinologist on Friday...And while it's a relief to *finally* know I'm not nuts, it's also very stressful and is really weighing down on me.

I'm being treated with Metformin 500/2X a day, a once weekly dose of Vitamin D, and Yaz. I was running late to my appt, so unfortunately I didn't get to REALLY talk with my doc..Basically she said "yep, it's PCOS. Take Met, Vitamin D, and Yaz. Met will suck at first but stick it out! It'll get better. Seeya". Soo..I don't really know why I'm on some of these meds. She said VitD will help w/hair loss and give me energy, but I'm not so sure about the Met. I've read about it on here, but i dunno why *i'm* on it. All of my bloodwork came back normal (in fact, my doc told me i'd live forever! lol), except for a high testosterone level.

I just started the Met last night, and have felt exhausted, weak, and hungry all day. But maybe I'll post *this* question on the Met board.

Just wanted to introduce myself and see if maybe you guys had any opinions on the whole met thing (why i'm on it?), or any advice. I'd definitely appreciate it! You guys seem like such a helpful bunch, I'm glad i found this place.

-Kaylee

I got on the met er and take it at night because i have kind of a pissy stomach, so if it ends up being TO hard on your stomach, know that is an option.

it's good you caught it so early, but you know you should also start trying to eat healthy and exercise to make sure it doesn't cause other problems down the road. This is also important if you want to have kiddo's later.

my dr is having me take calcium supplements to help with weight loss also. But I am on these because I'm lactose intolerant so just upping my milk drinking isn't an option.

thanks for the reply. I've heard about the Met ER, so if i start having stomach issues (so far, so good for the most part), i'll have to ask my doc about it.

I'm *trying* to follow a healthier diet, though i never ate all that poorly to begin with. Maybe just too many carbs. I'm having a hard time keeping the carbs down, especially when i've been SO darn tired all the time...I feel like all i want is carbs! lol i swear, if i even think about chicken or something i wanna hurl. :-\ Hopefully this subsides...

I do hear that a lower carb/fat diet is best while on met. Any experience with this? I'm not really overweight, I'm 128lbs at 5'1.5" (that .5 matters! ) But I do have a LOT of stomach fat for my weight. I'm hoping the met/diet combo will help this..

i'm new to this and fighting the "carb" battle too... really you'll help yourself a lot of you just make sure the carbs you do have are whole grains. brown rice, whole wheat bread, whole wheat tortilla's (strangely good), and such. I wouldn't cut them out totaly, but from what i've read most sights recomend instead of 50% of your diet being carbs having it be just 40%. I've been just not having them with one meal.

thanks for the info. I've been trying to leave carbs outta one meal too, buuut i'm finding it pretty difficult lol. I'm actually contemplating dinner right now, and mac n cheese is sounding SO GOOD. Must fight it...haha. anyway, thanks for the heads up about whole wheat tortillas too. I LOVE anything to do with wraps/tortillas, so it's good to know i won't have to give those up!

I am taking simular things to you. Well I will be. They havnt came in the mail yet. I was to lazy to go to the pharmacy at the hospital and wait for 2 hours.

Right now I am taking Vitamin D. Because I have a Vitamin D deficiency showed up in my latest blood work. They were testing everything to find out why I kept getting acid reflux.

Just recently i was diagnosed officially with pcos. Even though I have known I had it since I got out of the military. Thanks to my trust military record but know one told me and it took me a while to convince someone to do testing.

I have to take metmofin it looks like 500mg tablets but the paperwork could be wrong to lol it says I am taking it for diabetes and not pcos. Got to love the VA. They also have me taking Progestrone and BC and of course Omesprazole for the acid reflux. I hardly asked any questions to my doctor either. She said she was refering me over to a specialist and i figured I would save my questions for them.

The only thing I am concerned about taking is the birth control pills as I looked up the ones she gave me online and it says not to take if you have a history of migraines. WTF and something else that raised a brow with me that I cant remember now.

if you find your exhausted alot and changing that is what is one of your dieting goals is, rather then the 3 average meals a day idea, try making 6 smaller meals a day, that way you are eating every couple of hours, which helps out your metabolism alot and can help make your energy more consistent rather then in peaks. i have recently been changing up my diet and it has to be the hardest thing to do but now that im having the smaller meals more frequently im not as exhausted and im not binging out on a meal cuz i left it to long, and then feeling bad later and the need to burry that feeling in more ice cream or whatever. when i cheat, i make it at least worth feeling horrible about it lol....
hope that helps. keep up with your battles and good luck!

Thanks for all your help guys!! I'll definitely consider some of those suggestions. Yesterday I started taking the Met 2X a day...we'll see how that goes.

I know this feeling so much! especially the strange relief you find when you get diagnosed as if its good to hear atleast their is a name to the problem.
I'm not on meds yet, but i just realized today even when after a year of "diagnosis" im still in denial and waking up its hard. I cried even thinking of it. I felt so angry at everything but then i did some research and found i wasnt alone,it was a little bit comforting. but its hard having a problem like this and finding it so difficult to talk to your closest friends which i do. i rather not tell them now.

btw kaylee whats it like after you gone on the meds?
what the pro's and con's? does it effect the weight? or hair growth?

take care and good luck
