Question Newly prescribed with some questions

I was just prescribed metformin 1500mg/day to take after breakfast, lunch and supper.

What kind of side effects should I expect? How soon after taking it will the side effects appear? How long do they last? Do the side effects eventually go away?

My last question is if I miss taking a dose after breakfast (or lunch) can I make up de the dose before bed or does it always have to be taken after a meal?

THANKS for any info you can share

Cool

I was just prescribed Met, also. My doc is only doing 500 mg every three days, then every two days, etc., etc., etc., until I am up to 1500/day. I am a little surprised that you were immediately started on that dosage.

Anyway, I took my first pill after dinner and I was up all night with severe diarrhea. Then, today, I took it basically on an empty stomach and ate a breakfast bar w/i an hour. I did end up in the bathroom once this morning, but NOTHING like the other night. I don't know if eating AFTERWARDS made the difference or if it was no longer new to my body. I would follow the label instructions and then adjust it to fit you and any side effects you may experience.

Hi! I started taking met at the beginning of July. I was lucky to not have the diarrhea as a side effect but I had nausea whenever I tried to eat anything (which started immediately after my first dose) and just a feeling that I was full when I had just taken one bite of something. I gradually increased the met from 500 to 1500mg over a period of a week and a half. If I miss a dose and don't remember within two hours then I just skip it...but I don't know what the doctor would recommend on that. I've read that you should always take it at the same time (from people that post on here). Oh, and my symptoms have pretty much faded except slight nausea when I eat...which of course I am hoping is because I'm pg but probably is still from the met. Hope this helps a little bit...good luck!
Crystal
