Thumbs down In the news: employers charging you for being overweight?

Hi Everyone,

I am not sure what forum this topic belongs in...but this issue is "on my mind" considering this has been in the news near me for the past several weeks.

From what I've heard in the news stories It seems that some employers are considering charging higher health insurance rates to their employees who are overweight or obese. I guess they're considering it in order to encourage people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. As well as the additional "cost" to health insurance overweight/obese people are presumed to cause (with a greater amount of health concerns over the years, etc). The stories also indicated that some employers may even CHARGE employees who are overweight for being so.

As a woman living with PCOS and the daily weight challenges that entails, I am highly concerned about this. I have been working out and eating healthy on my own for as long as I can remember and still fall into the "overweight" column on height/weight charts... As many of you know, living with this frustration is hard enough without the added stress of having to pay more to see my physician or get a test... or even worse, an employer charging me for it!

I guess I am posting this to:
1. Find out if anyone else knows more about this and
2. Find out how we can fight against it. (or at least gain a stipulation that says people with certain condtions fall into different brackets, etc).

Thanks for listening!
-LondonKat

Only if the health insurance company decided to charge a person more for being overweight (that really sucks) it would cost the employer more so I guess it makes sense for them to have a higher amount deducted out of their paycheck to cover insurance. But I don't think it's fair for an employer to just automatically charge a person more for being overweight - that's not right at all.

Plus if your insurance company has already accepted you, they cannot suddenly raise your fee when you get obese or otherwise ill.

How can group health insurance do this? Is that not against the law?
