Default Niacin...

For anyone with high triglycerides...has you doctor every put you on Niacin? Has it been effective in lowering them? I started taking 500mg yesterday and take one every night. It made me sweat and made me itchy..kind of cruddy feeling. I felt like I was on fire!

I'm on Niaspan. So therefore I can relate. My Cardiologist told me to take a Benadryl for the 1st two wks. This will help the side effects you have listed. I now take 1 gram a night and if I miss a dose or two I have to go back down to 1 a night or else I get the itching, flushing etc. I also take asprin (sp) and that is suppose to help also.

My DH was taking Niacin 2 times a day to help with his cholesterol. The first time he took it he looked like he had a major sun burn, and he was so itchy.
The Dr told him to take it with an aspirin and that definately helped the side effects.
He is now off of the Niacin as it makes his tunitis worse.

You may want to see if you can find a flush-free Niacin, although I'm not sure if it will still have the same benefit.

Which is is, Niacin (like the b vitamin) or Niaspan? Just nosy... and with a family history of high triglycerides etc...

I have taken a B conmplex before with no weird effects... do you take it at a super dose for this or something?

I've been taking Niacin for several years now. It has helped to a point with cholesterol and tryglycerides. My levels are now in the normal range. My dr. added met to see if it get a little lower.
I take the "Slo Niacin" brand. I still get red and itchy at times but that brand does help. I also take my entire dose at bedtime so that if I do have the side effects, most of the time I sleep through it.
Good luck!
