I used to be on 20 mgs of Prozac and the bcp called "Alesse". I stopped taking Alesse in September of 2002 and stopped the Prozac before Christmas. I am now just on 25 mgs of Spironolactone (Aldactone) to help lessen the hair on my face.
I haven't had AF since being off the Alesse and was only on the Alesse to "regulate" AF. I kind of like not having AF but at the same time wish I didn't have pcos and ovulated regularly.
Since coming off of the Alesse my hair and scalp have become extremely greasy and now it is at all time record of being really greasy. My hair is starting to thin and shed too which scares me as I have very fine hair as it is (just used to have lots of it until recently). My family doctor knows that my hair shedding is due to the pcos and gave me a card to his dermatologist collegue to see what can be done about the hair shedding and I will make an appointment this week.
I went to a store to get my upper lip waxed and they sold shampoos and such there so I browsed while I waited. Turns out they carry "NIOXIN" which claims to remove DHT from the hair follicle and stops excessive daily hair loss or shedding.
It was like $49.95 for the big 1.5 litre bottle so I got a 5.1 ounce "trial size" for $10.95 and I shampooed my hair today with it. My hair is not greasy at all. Usually when I wash my hair in the morning, it is an oil slick by 4 pm. It is now nearly 11 pm my local time and my hair looks like I just blow dried it. I am curious though, the bottle directions say to lather your hair, wait one minute but do not massage. I was wondering who else has tried Nioxin and how did they like it? As I have only used it for the first time today, any more information you could share with me would be greatly appreciated!

I used the shampoo for a good while, and saw neither improvement or worsening of my hair-head loss. It's a great cleanser though!! I discontinued its use recently because I discovered it has copper-based ingredients and I am already under current investigation for copper toxicity. If my copper turns out okay, I'll probably start to use it again. I haven't used the nioxin serums or anything, just the shampoo & the scalp treatment (minty, tingly conditioner...works okay, okay detangler, not very conditioning though IMO).

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.
I think I'm in the minority because Nioxin made my hair brittle like straw.
If you do have PCOS, I would encourage you to explore controlling your insulin, you don't mention that in your post.
Also, according to Dr. Geoffrey Redmond who seems to be one of the only doctors who is publishing about women's hair loss, spiro is only effective in doses ranging from 100-200 mg. a day. And he recommends the brand name Aldactone as being more effective than the generic.
