Nizoral Shampoo

Hi
I was going through some thread in the BCP section where I read that Nizoral shampoo is being used by many cysters and that it has helped with the hairloss.
I have this kind of little itchy scalp and when i itch there is like deposits of dandruff (yuck..i know). I went to my dermatologist and she gave me Nizoral Shampoo (it says on it that it is for against dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis) and said that I might have this slight eczema which would go away with this.
I wanted to know does this exact shampoo also help with hair loss as well? because I havent used this shampoo as yet and I dont know myself if it is effective for it or not.
any help ?

I don't know about hair loss...but the active ingredient is Ketaconazale (sp?) which is an anti-fungal. I remember a few years back my hair dresser had prescribed this to me and around the same time I had read that some forms of severe dandruff is caused by a yeast that thrives in the oils produced by the sebacous glands. I had read somewhere else that this condition is also common with PCOS'ers.

I wish I had some documentation to source this now though. I use this shampoo about once a month for maintenance and the dandruff problem has gone away and stayed away.

Where can you purchase Nizoral? Only at a hair salon, or through a Dr.? Or is it OTC?

You can get a rx for a stronger formula of Ketaconazale (sp?) but I have good luck with the otc Nizoral shampoo. You can get it in just about any drug or grocery store in the US.
I use it 2-3 times a week on my hair and I also use it on my upper arms to reduce those little bumps.
