Probably two months or so. Remember, it takes a while for hair to grow and be visible. Did I get it all back? No, but I saw a few dozen hairs peek through after six weeks or so. I also leave it on for a minute or so before rinsing. That makes my hair feel a little drier, so I run Pantene's Breakage Defense conditioner through before or after (my hair is fine and breaks easily along the shaft, too).

I just started to use Nizoral 2%.
We can get it over the counter here.
I will post again when I see if it works for me.

Just an FYI Ladies! I have found a product that has saved my hair! I have bald spots terribly at the crown from the PCOS, the shampoo to buy is NIOXIN! It was made for chemo patients! You can only buy it in a salon and it is expensive, the smallest bottle of shampoo is 19.95 and the jumbo is 46.00. It is worth every penny! It basically strips your scalp of DHT (the balding hormone) and promotes a health scalp so new hair can grow. Every hair dresser I have ever had swears by the stuff! Some Walmarts carry it in their salon, I know Fantastic Sam's carries it! Good Luck!

Hi CysterAmy, thanks for your suggestion! i tried Nizoral 1% a couple of times but it sheded even more so i stopped. My hair is falling out a lot everyday. I think i will try Nioxin. Can i use it even though i am TTC? Also does it also cause even more hair fall in the begining? Looking forward to your response. I can try anything right now as long as it doesnt interfere with TTC. Else i might really go bald soon!

I too experienced the same problem. I used 2% for about 10days, I lost even more hair. Every morning I would wake up and hair all over, I actually started counting how many strands i was losing. And on top of that, my scalp really hurt. 2 days after stopping the shampoo, the pain went away and I didn't experience any major loss. Too bad the hair that came out was really strong, thick and healthy type. Perhaps I was too eager, I used it everyday, but I did read that one cyster was able to regrow all her hair by using 2% and spiro 200mg (100mg in the morning and 100mg at night). The success story was posted by JennP3 under success stories.

I have been using the Nizoral now for 2 weeks.
I am finding that I do loose hair when I wash it but the hair is not falling out constantly.
It is also falling out less as the days go on.
I am desperate to fix this so I wiil continue to use it and hope that things get better.
If it shows no improvement after a couple months then I may try the Nioxin.
I had good results when I was on Metformin and using a shampoo called Nisim as well.
Hopefully when I get back on the Met. in a couple of weeks I will begin seeing faster results.
Meantime...if anyone hears of anything that may help....PLEASE let me know!!
Thanks!

I think I've seen this in the beauty supply stores.

What does it smell like?

It smells minty...it tingles when you put the conditioner on! That freaked me out a bit the first time I used it.

Anybody finding that your hair is getting dry using the Nizoral?
Mine seems to be so I started using Infusium leave in conditioner.
I'll let you know if it helps.

Unhappy

I have male pattern baldness and it's depressing me very badly. It's the one symtom I am having the most difficult time with. I have done some searches on-line and have narrowed down a few treatments, but I am curious how your experiences have been with the Nioxin and the Nisim. I also found a product called revivogen, has anyone tried it? Please let me know. Every time I even think of the possiblity of loosing it all, I start crying. Please help.

Thank you!

I tried Nisim back in 2002 in August and September and,I think, half of October.
I did get good results.....although.....I was taking Metformin at the time as well and I have never really been sure if my hair growth was because of the Nisim, the Met.,or a combo of the two.
I stopped both the Nisim and Met. when I became pregnant with my first daughter.

I know what you mean about how the hairloss is the one symptom that you have that you have the most difficult time with!
Just last night I told my DH that as big as I am and as often as I have been self conscious about my weight...I think that having such thin hair on the top of my head is even worse for me.
Oh how I wish that there was a Miracle cure!

Both Nizoral and Nioxin tend to dry my hair out (I alternate), so I use the Nioxin conditioner on Nioxin days and Pantene Breakage Defense on Nizoral days (my hair is so fine that it sometimes breaks along the shaft, too.) I see some improvement, but I've found a new gyn (appt 10/30) that I plan to ask about other ideas...

I do find both the OTC Nizoral and generic 2% ketoconazole shampoo to be drying. I use Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Conditioner afterwards, which is quite heavy and keeps my hair from being dry. Pyrithione zinc shampoo has also been shown to be helpful in hair loss, and that conditioner contains 0.5% pyrithione zinc, so I figure it might help a little.

I also use either 1% or 2% pyrithione zinc shampoo on the days I don't use the ketoconazole shampoo. The 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo (regular Head & Shoulders) seems to be the least drying of the lot.
