Im just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
About 3 years ago after having a regular, normal period every 28-35 days, I started missing periods. At first they started to come every 2/3 months but now I ususally go for approx. 6 months without a period at all.
Now something else has happened. I've had my period for 3-4 weeks straight. Some days are very heavy, others are light or spotting. Im really quite concerned about it all. I don't think it has anything to do with the Met as I havent taken any for over 2 months as I felt it wasnt working.
Has anyone had a similar pattern or any advice?
Thanks ladies..... I really need some help.
Lissa

Been there. The only thing that a doc will do, is to put you on a 3-5 day provera to start a regular cycle. I was having that problem up until last week. I had my af, much like you described (light to heavy, some spotting, etc) for 8 weeks. I tried vitex to see if it would help, because I heard that it can stop the bleeding and help to make you regular. I have been taking it now for over a week and have had no bleeding. I talked to my mother and she told me that my aunt (homeopath) recomended she take it for female reproductive problems. It has worked for me so far. And hopefully it will continue to work.

Without drugs, i have my period every four or five months apart, each lasting approximately two months in length. Agh!!!
I'm on hormones to help regulate my cycle. They don't always work well, but its better than the alternative...
The one thing to remember if you're having periods like that, is see a doctor or pharmacist about iron pills or just a good multivitamin to replace the iron your body is expelling with your period.
As far as I know, bizarre periods are NORMAL in women with PCOS. It's due to the fact that you're not ovulating regularly, so until you do ovulate, your body is still gathering a blood lining for when a baby needs it. If this takes months, then you have months of no period, and then when you do finally ovulate, your body has all those months of lining to slough.
Hope this helps to ease your mind!!

I have had irregular periods (maybe four or five a year). Than about two years ago I was having them constantly. It seemed like I bled forever and would stop for a week and start again. I was soon diagnosed with hypothyroidism and once I strated treatment it resolved. Hope this helps.
Just wanted to say thank you for reply to my post.
Im sorry you all have the irregular cycles as well, but its a relief to know we're not the only ones. You have put my mind at ease and I have a referral to a new gyno in a few weeks so I will discuss all with him.
Thanks again - I love this site and look forward to chatting to you all again soon.

Momma to 1 furbaby!
Yeah I knopw whatchall mean. I just got past one of those cycles. I was bleeding for almost 12 weeks (at 4 weeks doc said it was normal in pcod women and I either needed BC pills or Chlomid) when I finally contacted Doc and told him this is crap! I was tired and emotionally and physically drained. I had not been with my hubby for weeks and the poor guy needed to get some...So did I! But I had no sex drive either, Who would with blood and and emotional Hiatis? So he gave me a 10 day Provera that should "make me stop bleeding and then give me a really good cleansing bleed" Well I still bled for 8 of the 10 days on the provera and still had a period that was cleansing. I thought my uterus was going to fall out of me. I bled so heavy that standing up would make it rush out. I was miserable for about 4 days, than it began to wane and after about a 7 days total of that cycle post provera. I have had no bleeding now for about 10 days!! Yeah Waht a relief, Now I just have to watch for AF because I have no idea when to expect her again. Let's just hope she doesn't overstay her welcome. I really want to Ovulate now! That is the worst crazy cycle I have had but I have experiancing similar to yours now for about 4 yrs. So I know whatcha mean. If you get anymore infor reguarding this please post! I am curious to learn more that what I know. And between us all maybe we can find a symptoms relief or prevention or something! GL!!

I know the feeling too, I had no af for 8months, then when she came, she wouldn't leave! It was 5 months of bleeding before my gyn rx'd provera to stop the bleed. (and I basically had to ask for it)... The course I had was 21 days, then I had the heaviest af I have ever had, like Sunn said, I felt like it was gushing out of me!
The point of the 21day course was to regulate me, and I was meant to start another provera course for 21 days after af, but I had too many side effects from the provera (constant PMS basically), so i didn't continue with it...
apart from the s/e's the provera definately worked for me, with the bleed stooping 2 days after I started taking the pills, and af arriving day 24 or so, and only lasting 5 days, (thankfully), but becuase I didn't do the 2nd course, it then took 64 days for the next af (but at it came natrually and only lasted 4 days!!! YAY!!) Now at cd26, haven't o'd yet, but hoping my cycle has reduced to under 40 days at least?!?! We'll soon see...
Hope you get some answers at your dr appt..
Take Care
Tollee

Well, since my last post to the subject... I started a real AF on tuesday and am just about over it. It was very crampy and heavy and I don't think I would be at this point without the Vitex. Woohoo, I sure am glad to be back to a normal AF for me. The Vitex isn't expensive and if you try it and it works for you, then you have saved yourself a visit to the doc. I am looking forward to the end of this AF and will continue on the Vitex.

The stars have shone down on me and Ive stopped bleeding !!! For a while anyway. Who knows how long. At least my sex life has had a chnge for the better!!! I know exactly what you mean Sunn. Although its good to know we are not the only ones out here with this problem, I really feel for you all having such an irregular and heavy AF. The worst part is that our ovulating is always so out of wack.... Hey - if you dont get a period, you dont ovulate is that right??? I'm new to all this fertility stuff. How do you know when you are ovulating?
Hope you are all well and happy...

Hi Lissa,
I'm not an expert on the ovulation subject (still only learning myself), but if you are not on BCP, taking your temp each morning helps you understand when you are ovulating.
Get yourself a Basal Body Thermometer, and take you temp each morn as soon as you wake. You need to take it about the same time each day. The thermometer will probably come with some instructions on how to chart your temps and also what it all means... I have also been using Fertility Friend on the net - www.fertilityfriend.com
If you enter your temps in there, each day it gives you an idea what your body is doing. It also wants you to pay attention to your Cervical mucus and it uses that info to analyse where you are in your cycle.
For more info about it - alot of ladies recommend a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" - by Toni Welsher (I just ordered it last week, from amazon.com - OZ book shops don't seem to stock it - its quite expensive though - ends up costing around AUD$70).

I had normal AF all my life until about a year ago...then AF came for 5 months and wouldn't leave until I went on bcp...it became very heavy...to the point I didn't go to work and went to OB/GYN ofc. Doc told me "he expected this...since I am not ovulating...my body is adjusting with bcp"...sure enough...3 to 4 days later...IT STOPPED.
Now a year later...I skipped a few pills and went back on bcp...and early AF came..and has gone on for 7 days! I am waiiting for her to leave!
My other ob/gyn thinks I am ovulating since my mucos was sticky during my pap, she says it's called something like "germerschvetz" or something like that.
I wonder who is right him or her (do I ovulate?)
I hate it when my lining builds up and has to dump out...whatta pain!

This was my life for many years. Isn't the month long period horrible?! Especially when it is so heavy! Oh how I hated this. I would go 9-12 months without bleeding then-hello-I would not stop. Finally I got the PCOS dx and went on bcp's, which was no picnic either. It took 2 different kinds of pills and 4 months to straighten myself out. Get some help if you aren't already doing so! DO NOT be like me and put it off!
