Default No carbs?

Can anyone help? I'm very confused.

I was diagnosed with Type II in March and my doctor told me not to eat any sugar

He'd already told me to "watch my carbs" (whatever that means precisely) and now reinforced the message by telling me not to eat any carbs re PCOS and succeeding with the elusive weight loss

Last week scan results revealed fatty liver and a gallstone - Doctor's advice? Don't eat any fats

Today, I sat in a hospital waiting room next to a poster advising Diabetics should base all meals around carbs

In summary, the conflict in my head is I'm diabetic so should eat carbs at every snack/meal yet I've been instructed not to eat carbs at all - what's the answer ?

I don't see a dietician until next week and meanwhile I'm feeling quite poorly on fruit, vegetables and fish alone, I'm past hunger, just weak and dizzy.

Any suggestions at all please ?

Many thanks in advance

K

I am diabetic and I eat carbs. Not alot, and they are natural ie:fruit, veggies, whole grains(I eat bread), occassional potato or pasta(dreamfields is awesome). I avoid sweets and sugar drinks like the plague but on occassion I will have a serving of ice cream(1/2 cup). Even as a diabetic you can still have a small treat every once in awhile.
The American diabetes association has alot of info on their site and it may help you. It sounds like your doctor isnt very informed about diabetic diets because if he was he wouldnt tell you to ban ALL carbs from your diet, just the bad ones.
Your dietician should be able to make a meal plan with you that will work for your needs! I hope you feel better soon!
Good luck!

Yes, I've high hopes that all will become clear next week. I have no fear of cutting things out of my diet altogether, forever if necessary - but I sure didn't want to feel like I've felt the last couple of days for much longer.

Thanks for the advice , K

Well, that doctor should be reported. It's extremely unhealthy to eat a zero fat diet.

Also, I've never heard a doctor say zero carbs (considering that vegetables are carbs, too).

Thanks for the tip .. I'm no expert but i KNEW you shouldn't just cut out whole food groups completely.

I tried to persevere today but couldn't tolerate it, I had a small portion of potato with dinner and a tiny bit of bread (two mouthfuls) - well, what dya know, within half an hour the headache I've been nurturing for 2 days vanished !

I'll check in next week and share news from the dietician

We had a diabetes educator present at a luncheon sponsored through work and it was on carbs and how to eat. Green leafy veggies, carrots (yes they are!) green beans, asparagus and other non-starchy veggies and legumes are okay to eat as much as you want. You can have dairy and starchy foods but not as much. You have to be very careful on fruit and fruit juice but they are allowed, just in small amounts. Protein eaten with carbs will help keep your blood sugar steadier and fill you up. Be sure to check your sugar before you eat and 2 hours afterwards. Your doctor should give you guidelines on your numbers. For me, fasting glucose is to be under 120, after meals under 150, although the ADA says 180. You learn by trial and error.
