No official Diagnosis yet.. Newbie Diet and other stuff help
This may be a long one.. so maybe you should only read it if you have time?
Hey everyone! Nice to meet all of you fine ladies.. this seems like an amazing place for support and growth.. And I appreciate all of you.
My name is Carrie.. I'm almost 28... I've been overweight for the majority of my life. I have an under active thyroid which.. is a pain.. and pretty bad social anxiety from being picked on since I was very young. (Which makes getting to the doctor a trial in itself)
I moved about a year in a half ago to a new city and state. At this time I decided to completely disregard my health for fear of going to the doctors. (On top of the social anxiety I've had awful luck with doctors) I went to a doctor here and it was absolutely awful... (Details spared) So I never followed up on my thyroid.. (I know.. worst idea ever) I finally found an amazing doctor and we got my thyroid straightened out... (kind of)
I told her of some other issues that I had.. (Hair growth.. missed periods, acen, I've done so much changing in lifestyles habits in the last few years and I still continue to gain weight like crazy ) and she mentioned PCOS. I know about PCOS because my sister has it. After researching on the good ole web I've noticed I have almost all of the symptoms. My doctor has said she wants to wait 2 months to test for it because my thyroid isn't normal yet.
I was wondering what I can do in the meantime, before the diagnosis to try to feel better. (I am walking about 30 minutes a day) I'm so tired and just generally feel awful. I just got my period for the first time in 6 months and it's just horrible.
(Right now I'm sitting at work feeling like i'm going to vomit for no reason.. who knows why)
Thank you all in advance for any advice you have. I'm really glad I found this place.
Hi Carrie and Welcome to SC!
We are so glad that you found us.
I don't understand the whole thyroid thing so I am puzzled as to why you can't be tested for the PCOS.....but I guess that is up to your Doctor to decide.
I think that if you are walking and watching what you eat then you are already doing the best thing for yourself....whether you have PCOS or not.
Until you are diagnosed, just continue to look after yourself and then perhaps you and your Doctor can discuss your options for the treatment of your symptoms.
I wish you all the best!

Hiya and welcome to S/C. This a great community, and the gals here are wonderful. I also have an underactive thyroid. That was what I was initially diagnosed with and put on meds, I was diagnosed with PCOS about6 months later. What I don't see is why you have to wait for your thyroid to straighten out, if anything, I persisted with my docs because I felt the symptoms weren't getting any better, which is why they sent me for an ultrasound and more tests. I would also suggest you get tested for Insulin resistance, which can be a big factor in many women with PCOS.
In the meantime, control your diet, watch out for too many bad carbs, and keep up with the excercise. Read up on the links on this site, and get informed as much as possible.
Big hugs.

Welcome to SC! I agree that you should be tested for Insulin Resistance. Even if you don't have that Metformin is a good drug for many cysters to take.
Some women get sick to their stomach druing AF. A hormone shift (like getting AF after months of not having it) can cause all kinds of problems including a sick stomach. Hope you are feeling better soon!
I completely understand your doctor fears, I've had them all my life. And like you they prevented me from getting the care I needed until I found my wonderful doc that I have now. I'm so glad to hear that you have a doc you like too. And I think it's great that you have made lifestyle changes. I know it's so frustrating (I'm there too right now!) but keep hanging on, even if we don't see results on the scales every time, we can be proud that we are doing something healthy for ourselves. :Hugs:
I don't understand about the thyroid either. I'm prety sure I was tested for thyroid along with my other PCOS bloodwork (that was 4 years ago so I'm a bit foggy LOL). But I was diagnosed by symptoms, and put on metformin, which helped a lot. I take cinnamon capsules, which can help with blood sugar issues and cholesterol.
Hope you feel better soon hun!
Hugs
Jenny

i understand exactly what you are going through, been there myself. As the other cysters have mentioned, a good diet is a great place to start. I have found "The Insulin Resistance Diet" is great. You don't feel too deprived and it's very livable. Exercising for 30 mins at least 3 times a week has helped me too. Even if you aren't seeing results in the weight loss department, you should feel a little better, plus it will get you on the proper road. I agree that you should be tested for Insulin Resistance. So many cysters suffer from it.
I hope things get better for you and if you ever need anyone to talk to, you can PM me anytime. I'm glad you've found us here, these women are spectacular!
