Default No period for 6 months

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS in June 2005, and have been very irregular. My last period was in October 2005 and my doctor put me on 1700mg Metformin in January 2006. Still no period!!! He also gave me progestrogen pills to induce my period, but still no period. I am very concerned, because I have heard going to long with no period can cause endometrian cancer. Has anyone else had this problem. Thanks cindy

Cindy,

My periods are very irregular. My latest absence of period ran from September 2005 until the last week of February. I wasn't watching my diet and was in weigh gain mode. As soon as I started Atkins (Jan. 30th) and loosing weight it returned within a couple of weeks. This has happened several times over the last few years. I know that if I am strick with my diet, my periods returns. Each time I go off my diet and begin gaining weight, it goes away again. I hope that loosing weight and the Met I just started will eventually regulate it to an extent that I don't have to be quite as strick with myself but I know that I will have to monitor it and keep on top of it forever.

I am in the same boat. My last period was Nov 2005 and I've been on Met (1500 mg) since Feb 24. Still nothing! My doc had me on 200 mg of Prometrium for 10 days to induce the period but it hasn't started. We are TTC so we can't really start any of the treatments until AF starts. We gotta just hang in there.....I know that watching what you eat can help. I'm working on that too.

Met isn't working for me either - and I am so frustrated about that! But, when I take progesterone, AF does come.

Cindym - how long ago did you take the progesterone? When I take it, I usually take one pill a day for seven days, then two days pass with no pills, then AF hits. So, in all it's a nine day wait from the beginning of progesterone till I see AF. Are you running a lot longer than that? I might contact my doc if that were the case.

Mine stayed irregular until I started eating to control my insulin. I found out i was actually counter-acting the drug with my diet. Also, do you exercise? That helps immensely too.

I would also have a heart to heart about your dose with your doctor. The max dose is 2550 mg snd perhaps yours isn't high enough for you if you have resistant hormones.

Hope it helps and that period shows it's face soon!

Default no period too!

Hi! I also have a similar problem. I went off BC pills in early December, had a light short period for 3 days at the end of Dec, then a one day HEAVY w/cramps that were the worst ever!, now nothing since. I started Met end the end of Jan. Did call my Dr.'s office, as I was concerned about going so long w/out AF...I was told that Met doesn't make the cycle regular but rather increases the chances of ovulating.

Frustrated, because I thought Met helped me with that years ago...but I also have a new Dr. since then.

Hang in there! Keep us posted!

Hi - I am in the same boat. Went of of BCP in August and haven't had AF since then. I started Met 1500mgs Feb 1. Still nothing. Called the dr. today - he will likely prescribe progesterone, which for me in the past has also not worked. I am also not IR so my diet hasn't required changing. Keeping my fingers crossed that something works as we are also TTC.

Default No Period

Hi Cindy,

Yes, I am currently on 2000 MG of Metformin daily. I haven't had a cycle in almost 6 months. My doctor just put me on Progesterone so I am waiting to see if it will bring my cycle back. It worries me too. I hope I can have children.

Hi, sorry it took so long to reply, I am kinda new at this. I was on 100 mg prometrium for 7 days, and then af should come by 10 days after that, but nothing. So know I tried progestrogen for 10 days, and finished my last pill 5 days ago, still nothing. I am very worried. I have been on Metformin since January, and have heard it can take a while to take affect. But why is the progestrogen not working. I hope I am okay. Hopefully af will come in the next 5 days, or I will have to make another appt. I am thinking about trying Yasmin to regulate me, I know it only masks the problem, but I know it can't be healthy to go so long with no af. And we have decided to wait on ttc, need to lose some weight first.

Hi I was just prescribed metformin about two weeks ago and started by taking the 500 mg then worked my way up to 1500mg. I started my period the fifth day on it, the first one in eight months!!!! My doc says its PCOS, but i didnt have trouble concieving my first child and I want a second. The fact that I started my period so quickly makes me wonder if ill be able to concieve just as quickly! Any help??????

Wow, that is great that you got a period so fast, and you will probably get pregnant quick too. I have been on 1500 mg Metformin for almost 3 months, I have lost some weight, but no af. I did get the dr. to give me progestrogen, and finally today I started after almost 6 months without. I got pregnant easily my first time, but we are having no luck at it the second time around. Good luck, keep me posted.
