Hi my name is Jen and I was Dx'd with PCOS about 9 months ago. I was on BC for 4 years and went to the doctor because of excessive weight gain. She first took me off of the BC to see if that was the cause and told me to come back in a month. I had gained 4 pounds in that month. I had never has a weight problem before and I have never overate. She then did a blood test and found that my testosterone was high and estrogen was low. After talking with me about my past irregular periods (why I was on BC to begin with) and my mothers history she determined that I had PCOS. She put me on 500mg of Metformin twice a day and I was taking that for about 4 months before stopping. I had the worst problems with it, I was not losing any weight nor having any periods. I was also having severe stomach pain even though I was taking it with food. I have been off the Metformin for around 3 months now and have still have not had a period. (No period since ending BC...8 months!) I have seen the doctor about not having a period and she does not seem to be worried about it. I have always had irregular periods but I have never gone this long without one before. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
My doctor hopes that Metformin will help me get my periods & lose weight
I'm on the lowest dose right now I just got on it.& I only take it once a day.I used to be on birth control the Ortho Evra patch for 4 years straight & ever since I got off of it my periods haven't been regular etheir :*(
I never gained anything being on the patch I kind of want to go back on it because I liked being on it just because my periods were regular when I was on it & I felt good that they were.Maybe u should go back on the BC pill?
My doctor thinks that I have pcos also she thinks that I might not be getting my periods because of my weight because I'm overweight.
Are u overweight? I'm trying to lose weight though I'm on a diet but it's hard to lose weight even on it.
Maybe u should try getting on something else to regulate your periods & to make them come?
I just want to be normal & get my periods again:*(
I know that exercising might help bring on your periods like make u get them or I think so anyways but I hate exercising I even hate that word:*(
Yes I am somewhat overweight. I gained around 50 lbs in a few years. My doctor advised me to stay off of the pill because we do want to have children sometime in the next few years. I have started exercising a little. I have to admit that I hate it! I'm hoping that if I drop some weight that I will start to have periods again.
Why aren't u on anything to get your periods going??
Their's medince to get them to come
Birth Control or Metformin???
U don't have to be on Birth Control.
Metformin can get them to come.
Why don't u try Metformin??
Why did your doctor advise u to stay off of the pill when u want to have childern in the next few years??
U can get pregnant after being off of it for like a year

I am a normal weight cyster that was on bcp for 14 years. I've been off now for @ 1.5 years. I had AF when on the pill, but since being off have only had one period on my own. If you're trying to lose weight, you could try some of the natural remedies mentioned on this site, just check out the natural remedies thread. Cinnamon has helped me and some other friends I know lose weight. It helps process insulin and speed metabolism. Apple cider vinegar is also good for processing insulin. There are also suggestions on there about natural ways to induce AF. I haven't tried any of them but seems to work for some. Your doctor could also give you Provera or Prometrium to induce your period, they are commonly given when women are TTC. Good luck, just take some time to read the valuable info that is all over this site.

I am lucky that I still get my AF even though it's crazy irregular. Tohelp me with my cycle to start my nex round of clomid my Dr gave me an RX for provera. It's a progesterone pill. "In short, it first gives your body the progesterone boost it needs to prepare for implantation and then when you stop taking the Provera, the lack of progesterone induces the shedding of the uterine lining (which causes the bleeding)." by no means I am NOT a Dr, but if I am having problems he sometimes will use it. Good luck!!!!

My OB says it is bad to go 3 months without a period so when I got of BCP and I went over three months without a period she would want me to call and she would call me in Provera/Prometrium to make me start and they always worked. I just had a baby so I am back on the BCP so I do have periods every month again now.

Check out the "alternative remedies" thread. There is tons of info on all sorts of natural remedies. I am a "normal" weight cyster, but I've lost @ 7lbs since doing the cinnamon and apple cider vinegar. I think my metabolism has definitely sped up. I also excercise regularly and watch my diet - low carb and no sugar. There are some excellent resources about dieting on the "diet and excercise" threads. I've just begun taking traditional chinese herbs and acupuncture in hopes of getting my periods straightened out. I don't know how it will work out, but I'm hopeful.

i understand the metformin not working, i have been on it for like uhhh i think a year and a half up to 850 mg 2xdaily. I just go to the doctors and they give me provera, I havent taken it in about 4 mths now should go back, but i believe you take it for like3 days or something... its worth looking into...
If you go to the "alternative remedies" thread, you can check out "Vinegar for IR..." it's toward the top where cysters post research and info and such, usually they call them "stickies" or something. You can also do a search by clicking on "search" which is in the toolbar underneath your "welcome sweetgirl" title. Just type in "apple cider vingar" and then do one for "cinnamon" Lots of stuff will pop up, but the info that is at the top of the various sections/threads whether "alternative remedies" or "excercise and weight loss" etc is where the great research-type info is located. Hope this is helpful.
