Hey all!
The last good period I had finished on the 23rd of May 09.
After that I never got a period
I thought I was pregnant because I had a bit of spotting few weeks after, and my hubby and I have been trying for over a year.
So I was nervous and really excited until I got tested and diagnosed with pcos.
I've now been on metformin for nearly a month.
Does not having a period mean that I'm not ovulating, so therefore cant get pregnant???
Well, we have not been doing anything extra to TTC, but we've been unprotected for my entire history and have never knowingly conceived. I've been on/off Met several times and for several variations of lengths of time and Met has not ever given me a period. I absolutely rarely get a period off Met as well. In fact the ONLY period I've gotten was Jan 06. All others were either initial bleeding age 14 (very long, uncontrolled), then regulated with BCPs, and since induced with Provera. SO... just in case it were to help you, my doc is not yet worried that I haven't gotten a period but we're all still holding out hope, and I started back on it in July... I really went 14 months on Met without it giving me a period a while back. So I kinda think Met doesn't work for me... but nobody seems to have better suggestions for me. I'd say you are to continue taking Met as it is known to help women finally get a period/ovulate. I feel like I've heard you CAN ovulate without getting a period. You could get the urine ovulation tests or other products, I'm a fan of earlypregnancytests.com.

Have you been charting your cycles and fertility signs? That can be a big indicator of ovulation oir lack there of. And I love ovulation predictor kits...Although I have never gotten a + and have used SO MANY this past cycle...last period was July 20. But my MD isn't worried since he isn't inducing it.
Typically, no period would indicate that you are not ovulating. Your eggs may be growing fine but not releasing which causes the cysts on the ovaries. I had this same thing, for the 8 year that we were "trying" on our own, I think I only had AF maybe 2 or 3 times a year. When we got medical intervention is when it was determined that I needed a boost releasing the egg(s).

I too have the problem of not getting a period it has been about two years since the last one and everyone is lighter and lighter, you can ovulate but it is unlikely but miracles do happen, the best way to stimulate ovulation is to lose wieght maybe 10 pounds or so depending on your size and thats the best way i have heard and to eat lots of veggies and fiber
My periods have been all over the place ever since I first started at age 13 (I'm 21 now). They tapered off in 2008 and I decided to go on BC, but I hated the side effects. Ever since April 2009 I've been exercising regularly. Much to my surprise every month since July 2009 I've been getting pinkish spotting and this month's (Sept. 2009) episode was heavier so I think my periods are coming back.
I'm assuming that my body took a little longer to throw off those BCPs that I was only on from Oct. 2008-Dec. 2008.
Personally I'm starting to believe that all those medications (although I've never been on Metformin) will only hinder your body and cause you to neither ovulate or have a period in the long run.

It's rather unlikely that you are ovulating if you don't have AF, but it is possible (I remember 20 yrs ago my doctor telling me never to assume I couldn't get pg because though unlikely it was possible). Hope the metformin alone helps you -- it didn't work for me, but I know it's helped so many others!
I am having the same issues as you.
I am on Met (2000mg) and I don't get periods. I have been on Met since last December, and I'm starting to think it's just not for me. I am hoping to see a RE soon!
I just wish so much I got AF (and ovulation) once a month like some women!

I've been on MET now for about 9 months and get AF about every 55 days, AF lasts up to 5 days.
I've had an irregular cycle since I first got AF, however, they put me on BCP and for 9 years I got AF every month.
When I came off it however, I had 3 periods in 18 months! Then I went on MET and I get AF every 55 days or so.
I don't know how to tell if you are ovulating, but I think I remember reading that there is a change in your vaginal discharge during that time? I could be wrong about that though.

Have you had issues with infrequent periods before? You didn't post how old you are. If you have any questions you should see an endochronologist instead of a gynechologist. You probably have insulin resistance, which means you produce insulin, but your body is resistant to it, therefore, your cells do not use insulin to turn carbs into energy. Insead, your cells turn carbs into fat. This makes you gain weight, which eventually throws off your feminine hormones, affecting your cycles and causing cycsts to grow on your ovaries. I never imagined insulin was so closely tied with my female hormones. For 20 years I was lucky if I had 1 period a year. Yes, PCOS means that you will not ovulate, or you will have infrequent ovulation. No period = no ovulation. But if you are using metformin, you should try to see if you have IR. You might want to talk to your doc about a low carb meal plan along with metformin. I use one diabetics use. It's not hard to follow. I'm almost 40 and have my periods spot on each month. It's been about 2 years and I've lost amost 50 pounds. Check out this medicinenet.com. It clearly explains the connection.

I have not had a natural period since the age of 16. I am now 26 and trying to get pregnant. I have been on and off birth control for the last year and a half. My doc has tried many things. Met alone did not work or with the use of progesterone. I just finished my first round of clomid. I did not ovulate. My doc says I need to have a period before I can try again. I have high hopes that something will work, it just takes time. You will also find something to work. You do need to ovulate to get pregnant. Ask your doc about your concerns. They will work with you until you find the right meds. Good luck

Is anyone having the same problems?
Just to let you know Bambi, it took me about 3 months to get AF when I first started taking MET. My Endo said it could take up to 3 months and she was right. I hope you get AF soon.
