Default No S/E does this mean it is not working

Hi all,

First I just wanted to say that I think this forum is amazing. I was diagnosed with PCO about 3 weeks ago with I had an internal ultrasound as a rountine CT scan that I had a dermoid tumour. After going to the docs for many years saying that my weight gain, skin etc etc was not normal. I put on about 15 kilos on 6 months for no reason. They never suggested that I might have PCOS/PCO as I didn't look like I had it as I was not in any pain go figure!!
I had my 2hr GT together with all the other check ups and came back normal.

Doc has put me on Metformin (Fortmet) and it is day three and I have not had any side effects, I even had indian food last night thinking that I might be in trouble..............and still nothing. It's not that I want them I am just wondering if the metformin is working or not????

Hey there

Day 3 is very early days so hard to say if it's "working" as yet. But from someone who has been sooo sick on Met, be very thankful you're not experiencing any side effects!! Yippee!!!!!

I have had very little side effects also and I have been on Metformin for over a month now. The only time I feel sick is when I have very little to eat in the morning and then I feel nauseas for about 2 hours. I also get major diarrhea when I drink alcohol. Not like a drank a lot or anything, but it is nice to go out for a drink with friends every once in awhile.

I have heard some of the side effects are horrible, but haven't really experienced a lot. I guess we can consider ourselves lucky. I actually feel better on the med.

Thanks for the prompt reply, do you know if the S/E would have kicked in by now if I was going to get them? How long does it usually take to get the sore tummy etc etc

Izabela, I'm sure the S/E would have kicked in by now if you were going to get them. Don't sweat not having them, just enjoy. I dont have any side effects either other than heartburn if I go to long without eating. But I had that before Met as well, its just worse now. If it concerns you that much, just call your doc and see if you can talk to him about it on the phone rather than wasting the money on an apt when its something simple. hope this helps.
Ciao, Rachelle

I quickly skimmed it, but have you mentioned what dose you are on?

I started the Met with 500 mgs and for the first week I felt great. I added another 500 mgs to make it 1000 mgs a day and was still ok, just gassy. I added 500 more to get to the full 1500 mgs dose and I am sick to my stomach alot, have reflux and *D*. I was so happy to not have symptoms, but now I am in week 3 of it and on the full dose and have many symtpoms. If you started off with the full dose and have had no symptoms then that is great, but keep in mind, if you are building up your dose, you may start symtpoms the more of it you have to take.

Best of luck.
~Stacey

Since we are on the subject....I started out on 500 about a month ago, and went up to 1000 a day about a week after starting. Once I hit 1000, I had *D* for about 2 days, and now nothing. I know you guys are saying that we should feel lucky...but could it be that our dose isn't high enough?
