Question Nodules

Anyone else suffer from nodules? I have rather large ones, 10 mm, that appear and then disappear with regular monitoring. My bloodwork always comes back normal.

I figure, this can't be normal, but my doctors seem to ignore it.

I have one I think it 3 or 5 mm, I can't remember. My Dr has had me go in for and ultrasound every 6 months for the last 2 years to make sure it hasn't grown.

I just found out that one of mine grew from 7mm to 11mm. I have a second one that has remained around 6mm. My thyroid bloodwork is all normal, but my GP is sending me to an endo. I have an appointment next month. I think once it gets bigger than 10mm, some doctors keep a close eye on it and may even do a biopsy.

Hashimoto's disease runs in my family, and I know that nodules can come along with this. Even though my levels are normal, I'm going to push for the endo to check my thyroid antibodies.

Actually, I know that about 55% of people are said to have nodules. They are somewhat normal, but the fact that your's come and go seems odd to me. I wonder if it's an error on the ultrasound techs part? Are you seeing a specialist?

Yes, I am seeing a specialist, and he sends me the ultrasounds to monitor the the nodules. I also suspected it was a tech error. I was told to go for another followup in 3 months, instead of 6 months.

It did seem weird to me that one disappeared and a bigger one appeared in another spot.

Back in the '80s, even before I was diagnosed with PCOS, I developed what they told me was a "benign multinodular goiter" in my thyroid. The endocrinologist monitored the size of it and my thyroid hormones, which remained normal. My thyroid shrank back almost to normal size after nine months or so, and I never had any followup on it. Now that I am over fifty, with type 2 DM and fibromyalgia, I started seeing an internist, who was very interested in my thyroid, and thinks I may have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is interesting because it's an autoimmune disorder, and also because you can start out with normal hormones and become hypothyroid later on.

Back in 2002 my thyroid levels were off & I was found to have several nodules. I was monitored for awhile & I had some free blood work done thru my work & my thyroid levels were really out of whack. After an US & a nuclear medicine scan it was discovered most of my nodules had grown in size but a couple had disappeared. One of the nodules was "cold" (it was cancerous) & I eventually had a total thyroidectomy.
I'd guess it's prolly tech error...

My mom had one on her neck that turned out to be benign but she has to get it rechecked in 6 months.
