Default non fasting glucose test

This is a cross post since no one answered or seems to know the answer at the other forum...
I have been feeling awful lately and my dr. did a wellness workup and one of the tests she did was for my glucose levels. I had this test done at 3 in the afternoon and had eaten breakfast, lunch and a snack by this point. My glucose levels were at 81, she said anything between 65 and 110 are considered normal and they are fine. I had never heard of a glucose or insulin test that does not require you to NOT fast before hand...is this accurate or what? I had my insulin levels and glucose tested (fasting) 2 years ago and they were low. Should I ask for a insulin and glucose fasting test or would the results be the same essentially?

My endo usually tests my non-fasting glucose. The nurse said that they can run the A1C test to find out how my glucose is performing over time if I get an unusually high reading.

Since you weren't fasting, 81 is a great reading. I'd guess your glucose does get extremely low sometimes. Mine is usually 84 when I'm fasting.

There are a few different tests that can be done. The one you had done shows how your body reacts to what you've eaten. It's a very common test. However, the fasting tests can give more information.

Here are some links to read; they'll explain it *much* better than I can.

I've had different doctors do different tests. Most have done a fasting glucose, but I've had some who would do the fasting insulin when I requested it (that's really the one I, personally, need watched). I also had one doctor who was convinced that I should be using a glucose monitor daily to watch my levels. He wouldn't listen that I wasn't diabetic, just pre-diabetic and I've been told by many doctors that I don't have to do that. So I got my glucose levels checked *every* time I saw him. Which wasn't often, thankfully; it was his wife that was actually my doctor and she watched my levels by doing a HbA1c test. Which really didn't help me any. My RE had done a fasting insulin right before one of the A1c tests, and my insulin was too high yet the A1c came back fine. That happened twice. So in my case, I need the fasting tests done to really get any answers.

Read the links above; 2 have info on diabetic testing, the other one is for insulin resistance testing. Then talk to your doctor, see if she'll be willing to do more tests if you still want them done.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks ladies. Great articles by the way. There is so many different ways to do things that it gets way too confusing. They should stick with one way across the board...
