Default non IR and Met, but not TTC

Has anyone had their doctor prescribe Metformin BEFORE they were TTC?? I was diagnosed with PCOS from a clinical perspective in February (all labs normal, non- IR, just irregular periods and excess facial and tummy hair) and all my Dr told me was to not gain weight and keep taking my birth control and let her know when I am ready to start TTC. The thing is I will not want to start trying for probably 5 more years. My main complaint right now is the excess hair on my face and stomach. I tried laser hair removal a few years ago and after I thought the hair was gone it started to slowly return.

So, I was just wondering if anyone's Dr has put them on Met before TTC???

I was diagnosed in 06 when i went off bcp for about 6 months and never got a cycle. When they realzied what i had i was back on the pill in the blink of an eye after having surgery. I just had a Dr. Appointment with a new GYN who is also an RE and we have agreed even though i am not TTC i am good to go off the pill. I get bloodwork again 5 weeks after my last pill and we will see if i can regulate on my own now that i am thinner 180 lbs to 115 now. If i can't do it on my own he said it would be up to me if i want to go on met. I was warned that the results aren't as good for thinner patients but he said if i want to I can try it. So far i have not been DX as IR but i am being rechecked for the first time since 6/06.

Tbone: Hey! I have the same question as you. I was on birthcontrol for 6 years and when i got off ( a year and half ago, i have only had my peroid once). I was DX last week...and I REALLY don't want to go back on birth control b/c I always gain weight. I would rather try Met. The only symptoms I have are no periods and I have gained 12 lbs in the past year and a half (despite my efforts to diet and exercise like i usually do). I am still rather thin (5'7" and 143)...so i am trying to decide if met would work as well.

Abby: how did you loose all that weight?!

Hey TBone. I am not IR, not TTC, and my doc put me on Metformin, but I take the Glucophage for less side effects. My main symptom is hair loss. I've read a lot of success stories with women having regrowth, so I'm giving it my best shot. BTW, I'm 25, 139 lbs, 5'7 1/2 Let me know if you have any other questions.
