Default Non-supportive partner

Hi,

I was wonder if anyone out there has a partner who doesn't support their depression. My husband doesn't 'believe' in depression and is unwilling to do anything to help or make any concessions in his life because of my extra needs. How can I help my type 'A' personality husband that my depression and panic attacks are as real as any physical illness and that I need his help.
Has anyone else dealt with this?

TIA,
Carrie

My condolences to you. My hubby too is unsupportive. When I was convinced I was depresed he was like "you're just not organized." WHATEVER. Suicide thoughts, crying all day, not bathing for days is NOT being disorganized. I personally say to visit with your doc and make sure you have a good group of girlfriends who you can openly visit with.

Has he been to any of your doc appts? That might help him to understand that depression is a real illness, and needs to be treated just as any other. Also, he needs to know that often there is a link between depression and physical pain, with one being able to cause the other, interchangeably.

I'm sorry your partner isn't more help. Hope things improve for you.

I'm sorry to hear your husband isn't more supportive. are you in therapy? it might be a good idea to get him into one of your sessions. and if you don't go it's a good idea just for yourself. the right person can help a lot. it also might be a good idea to get him to do some research. maybe pick up a book on helping your partner with depression for him to read. its hard enough to feel that way but to have the person you're sharing a life with not take it seriously. i hope you guys work it out and more importantly i hope you get yourself to feeling better. *hugs*
