Default Norelco shavers?

Many people on this board have recommended Norelco electric shavers, but as there are many different Norelco models, I was wondering if there is a particular model people would recommend??

Sadly, that's not as easy as you might think. Norelco (the name is only for the US; the parent company is the Dutch Philips company and they're sold as Philishaves outside the US) produce different model numbers even for different large retailers, so the range is bewildering. And the minor features seem to change from month to month. However, it seems that at the moment there are four ranges -- top of the line is SmartTouch-XL, then there's Speed-XL, next down is Quadra Action and the bottom end of the range is the Reflex Plus. They're all good, but what you find is that as you go up the range you get better rechargeable batteries, better and faster charging systems, more convenience features on the charging side (better indication of how much time left before you need to recharge) and on the mechanical side you get more sophisticated cutting heads in a more flexible mounting -- which is very important when shaving around the upper lip and chin area, which is where most of us have the sort of growth we need to shave most frequently and want to be sure we remove completely. So while you may not get quite what you pay for, you do get a better shaver at the upper end of the range. You're also likely to get a nicer traveling pouch, which is actually quite important if you're likely to be carrying it around in your purse.

They are particularly good -- they don't irritate the skin and they're very quiet compared to most others. Not quite so macho looking as a lot of other men's razors, either. The only downside I'm aware of is that they're not good on longer hairs -- but then, no men's shavers are. They're designed to deal with very short hair, as soon as it becomes in any way bristly. So if you have anything that's longer than that, you've first of all got to remove it down to skin level with the trimmer then shave with the normal heads.

Hope this helps

Would this particular one be any good? http://www.norelcostore.com/product_...1=NOR%20HP6492 It looks really nice and I like that it's safe for sensitive skin but I want it to function as if for a Man. I wasn't sure (based on the color) if this was just for women. I think, though, that since it says it's good for the delicate bikini area that it would be perfect for the face...but I want it to really get it all and not leave any hairs behind! lol I'd like to be able to wear my hair pulled back in public sometime, especially since it is so gosh darn hot out!

That's not actually a shaver at all, but an epilator which plucks out the hair. You should go for one from the men's range, preferably from the Quadra or Smart Touch ranges. With Norelco the more expensive ones are generally better -- better shaving heads, better batteries, better charging systems etc. But remember that they're designed for the face and for hair that's no more than very short stubble at the longest.

Okay, thank you so much. Do the shaving heads need to be replaced often? I'm going to look up the selections you shared with me. Thanks!!

If you're just using them on your face the heads will probably never need to be replaced. They're self-sharpening. The only fault I've ever found with the Norelco (men's) range is that they're no use on anything other than the very shortest of hair.
