"Normal" Glucose and IR levels

Can someone confirm -- the normal fasting glucose is 70-100. What about insulin? My lab's range differs from the articles i've read.

Normal fasting of 70 is considered as low...around 90-100 is normal. As far as insulin, I am not sure...I don't remember what mine was...What was your glucose level? Did you have a glucose tolerance test?? What were the results?

My glucose was 117 and insulin 19. Is the glucose tolerance when they check it after 2 hours of sugar intake after fasting ?

yes, you drink this sugar drink and they draw blood every 30 minutes for two hours. 117 for a fasting level is a little high. Mine was 117 also. When I had my Glucose tolerance test, 30 minutes after I drank the stuff, my sugar level was 135, 1 hour it was 180, 1 1/2 hour it was 265 and the 2 hr mark it was back down to a 165. I was dx as type 2, unfortunately...But I have been able to control it with diet and exercise. I was put on metformin to help with that along with PCOS. I hope this helps..

Thanks flyfisher for the info. It's greatly appreciated! Do you recall your symptoms with the slightly elevated glucose ? I fasted for about 10 hours prior to the test, but i did have a very high sugar (cake) the night before. I wonder if that skewed the results?? In june, my glucose was 90!!! I will definitely inquire about the glucose tolerance test.

The cake could play with your glucose levels, but I would think 10 hours would be enough time to lower it back to normal. Usually your glucose level will be back to normal within 2 hours after eating something you shouldn't. In my case, it takes about 4 to 5 hours after I eat something I shouldn't, unless I exercise. Exercise will bring your glucose levels back to normal for 24 hours. I am glad I was able to help..If you need anymore information, let me know. You might also want to go to the american diabetes association website for more information...Also, you may want your doctor to do an A1C to see what your average glucose level was for the last 2 to 3 months. Take Care..

I just realized that I didn't answer the question about symptoms when sugar level is elevated. It depends on how high it gets. When it is elevated, I get real thirsty and need to go to the bathroom a lot. Sometimes, depending on how high it gets, I get real sleepy and can hardly keep my eyes open or it can go the other way, I get real anxious and feel like my heart is racing. Also, I notice my eyes are a little blurry. When my glucose level is low, I get a quick severe headache and my brain goes to mush. I can not put together much of a sentence and can't make any decisions.
