normal, preggers, miscarriage, hypo?

hi there...

so, my thyroid has always been 'normal'. well within normal ranges i'm told - not in the high or low ends of normal.

i got pregnant - woo-hoo!! total suprise. was not trying, was not expecting.
we lost the baby - i was 11 weeks, the baby had died at 9.

6 weeks after the m/c, I went for some bloodwork - my OB wanted a hormone panel done. Well, all of a sudden, I'm hypo!!! What???

My TSH was at 11 something. My t4 was .79, just slightly low.

I am trying to link this to the pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage. I wasn't noticing any symptoms, until I started reading about them. And I have a few, but they only started after I was pregnant.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? Did anyone ever get hypo after being pregnant? Will it level out over time, or is this forever now?

My doc wanted me to have the blood work re-done, just to see if there's a difference. I guess we'll wait and see now....

Well I just started seeing a new endo because we wanted a full check up before trying for #2.

My thyroid is 'normal' but not where it should be for having a baby...

So go figure. Apparently 3.98 is good enough for me but baby needs me to be closer to 2.5. I think there seems to be a pattern that emerges with me and m/c.

All the angels I have lost have all been around week 9. I'm sorry for your loss.

canadianmutation - i'm so sorry for all your losses. i guess there must be some kind of pretty close link between pregnancy and thyroid. so maybe the pregnancy did trigger this for me? i'm the kind of person who needs a reason for everything! i can't just accept the fact that all of a sudden i'm hypo. you know what i mean?

Well my endo explained that the reason why she suspected the thyroid playing a part in my m/c is due to the fact that they all happen at the same point in pregnancy when the thyroid is important because baby's system hasn't taken over yet.

The same thing happened with me. I was told that my thyroid levels were slightly off after my miscarriage. Since then, I have not received a straight answer if my current dosage of levaxin is helping or if I need more. The doctor keeps saying that I'm "fine" but they will keep me on the pills because it should/could get worse in the future.

i have since been re-tested and now diagnosed with Hashimoto's. And I actually read somewhere that b/c it is an autoimmune disease, and pregnancy causes your immune system to vamp up, that it likely is a trigger (that and miscarriage) for Hashi's to rear it's head. Supposedly you are genetically predisposed to Hashi's, so if you're not already showing symptoms, then you likely will after you get pregnant.

So i've been on the synthroid now for just over two weeks. i will have levels re-checked in mid-May, and we will go from there I guess.

oh, the excitement....

Glad you have been able to figure out what is causing your thyroid woes...now you can move forward with good thyroid treatment!

I'm so sorry for your loss. This happened to my sister. She lost her baby around 9 weeks too. She was told that when you're hypo and become pregnant, your body can't produce the right amount of growth hormone to sustain the pregnancy and the baby will stop growing and die around 8 or 9 weeks. Unfortunately, the standard tests most doctors perform to test for hypo aren't always picking it up. Please see my post "Finally! A doctor who would help me!" I posted all the different tests there are for figuring out your thyroid. I wish you the best of luck in conceiving and carrying to full term next time.

Lizzie Ruth,

First, let me say that I am very sorry that you lost your baby. Second, here's my two cents worth...I was Dx Hypo in 3/02 --Before I got pregnant--and put on Synthroid. I averaged at 88 mcg daily. My endo checked me monthly while TTC and while pregnant to my son. In that whole time, I only had to increase my meds once up to 100 mcg. My pregnancy was beautiful and my son born healthy. After that though, my thyroid was pretty stable on the 100 mcg dosage but went totally wacky after a m/c and I had to go up to 175 mcg daily and am still on that dosage, which is pretty high. I lost my last pregnancy at 6 weeks and they discoved that my TSH was a bit elevated (around 7 or 8, I think), but had been great the prior few months. He keeps me between 0.5 and 2.5, which he feels is optimal for TTC. He said that he did not feel the TSH is what caused the m/c. He said it's more important to look at the T3 over time to see if it is steady or a significant change. Mine had been steady. He truly did not believe my thyroid was at play in the m/c, nor did he believe that the m/c caused my thyroid to go nutty.

My advice is to see if your endo will monitor monthly. It's better to get the whole picture and develop history of what your body is doing.

Could you post a link to this thread? I tried searching for it and was unable to find it.

For the past 14 years or so, my thyroid has consistently come up as a possible problem. However, every time I have the blood work abt. 1x per year, it comes out in the normal range. However, I have every symptom except acne and my BBT (when taken in the morning) is about 95 - 95.6. It is so frustrating.

Like you, I was pregnant went in for an u/s at week 11 and found out I lost the baby at week 9. No explanations for it.

hypothyroid runs in my family also.

I am more and more convinced this is a problem and no one is helping me. They keep telling me "stay on the Met" which I have been on for 3 years with no success. If anything all of my symptoms have gotten much much worse.
