So, from my reading up on PCOS, it seems that higher testosterone is the culprit...mine didn't come in high at all, but the endo still diagnosed me as having PCOS...
My testosterone is in the normal range, but a little on the high side and I definately have PCOS. Did they do your free testosterone? That's the culprit more than the bound testosterone.
Testosterone levels are just one of many indicators of PCOS. There are heaps of others that you need to get tested. There is a thread in this forum about what tests to have. All mine have been normal so far so I am about to get tested for free testosterone and insulin resistance.
If you've had other tests let us know what they were and we can fill you in with where to go next if you're not sure

Thanks, Ladies! Originally, they were testing me for Cushings, but those levels came back more or less normal so they decided it was PCOS instead...I have to get new copies of my lab reports as I have put the ones that I had "somewhere safe" - which means I will never find them again.
Hopefully you can find your numbers and post them. I did have high testosterone (119) Medication brought it down to 19-22. Whenever it goes above 25 or so, I develop symptoms: weight gain, acne, hair growth/loss...So, I guess "normal levels" are different for everyone.
I am not insulin resistant, never have been, but a diabetic drug (Metformin) has worked wonders for most of my symptoms.
I go crazy sometimes trying to figure this PCOS out. I am greatful to finally have a wonderful Endocrinolgist treating me

I have been to three different endos over the last 9 years or so...the first found a polyp of some sort on my thyroid but said that it was too small to be of any worry. The second one thought that I must have cushings, but then decided that I was just fat. The third one thought that I had cushings and then decided that I had PCOS. So, after about a year of "OK...whatever", I'm buckling down and trying to figure out just what this means.
My goal is to get my weight down from 312 to a range where TTC is a safe goal.
Pain in the neck, ain't it, girls? I'm really happy to have found this site!
MAllison - Congrats on the IMPRESSIVE weight loss! You are my HERO!
Yep. Some endocrinologist (like mine) use the cut off for testosterone to be over 50 even though it was within the reference range between 14 and 76. Mine didn't show out of the range in February, which was 67. Like you, I'm not IR but I've been on metformin for 2 months so far. I will get my bloodwork done in a month to see how well it works. You might have some success with it. Will your enodocrinologist consider metformin for you? Metformin may actually help you reach your goal.

Peppagrl...yes, the third endo mentioned metformin...I think that is the next step. I'm really hoping to be able to handle the situation through diet, if possible, though.

Oh great Lyndyn! I wish you success with met! And, I know you can do it!!! You seem pretty determined!
Lots of ladies here talk about the IR diet, have you considered it? It seems to be easier to follow for me and it seems more of a lifestyle change than a diet. It's all about link and balance your protein with your carbohydrates.
