Smile NOT IR and Met?

I have just been reading through the posts and saw that some of you are not IR, but taking Met... I thought Met was for IR?

I'm not IR, so I'm wondering if that would help me too for ttc?

Thanks!
Bailey

My doctor has not tested me. He says that the test results can vary so much that is not that reliable (or I think thats what he said). It's worked for me, but maybe that means I'm IR? I'm not sure. Its kind of a crummy med with bad side effects initially, but if it works, its worth it! (and they eventually go away... you usually start with 500 mg once a day and work your way up each week, I'm now on 1000mg 2x a day). I don't know what else to tell you. Sorry!

Thanks for helping! I've been IR tested 4 or 5 times since being diag w/pcos - it's never been a prob for me. I guess I'm going to ask my RE about met & me and see what she thinks...

Thanks again!
Bailey

Bailey - I just went to my RE on friday. I've been tested for IR 3 times and have never been diagnosed with it. This RE is a specialist in PCOS, fertility and diabeties. He took one look at my knuckles and saw shadows and said I was IR. He said the test only weeds out 20% of cases.

I'm on met...just started a couple of days ago. No side effects at all. I'm being really strict with my diet and started exercising lots.

Hopefully I will fall pregnant in the next few months. I haven't had a period for over a year.

Good luck.

Suz

I'm not insulin-resistant, but I take Metformin. I've been on it about 3 weeks now and haven't really noticed a change yet. I am currently up to 500mg twice a day, but the goal is to get to 1000mg twice a day. I started taking it because I read in a medical article that "Treatment with metformin promotes ovulation and reduces testosterone levels in women with PCOS, even if they are relatively lean and insulin-responsive." I thought I'd give it a try! I think that it may help to add it on if you are TTC.

Hi Guys,

here is a picture on the net.....

http://health.allrefer.com/health/ac...-the-hand.html

The technical name is acanthosis nigricans. There are lots of posts on SC with this if you do a search for it. Some people get dark skin around their neck, others get it under their arms. I don't have very dark skin. Mine is more olive. I can see slight shadows on the knuckles just before my finger nails. Not so much on my mid finger knuckles. They look like dull bruises....VERY LIGHT. I have read that they are more common and stronger looking on people with dark skin.

Cheers,
Suz

That is so interesting. Thanks, Suz! I don't think I have any shadows, but I'm going to be looking at everyone else's hands. Ha, ha - nosy me!
