I just found out about a week ago that I have PCOS, and well I am not at all sure what it is, I mean I have read some about it on the internet, but they use so many medical terms.
What I have read it souds like diabetes goes along with it, since I have PCOS does that mean I am going to get diabetes when I am older (I am only 17)
I guess that way I feel now is that I have been told I have PCOS, but what do I do from here, since they have realized that I have it so young is that going to help anything, and what do I need to be worried about as far as how is this going to effect me? I would love to hear ya'lls input.
I can understand that you are confused, and do not know where to start. I reccomend that you go to the info page for newbies at http://www.soulcysters.com/info.html from there you can read the sections on how to begin.
Your course of treatment will depend upon your unique set of symptoms that you are experiencing,PCOS can affect everyone differently. The medical websites are very generalized. You need to work with your health care provider on how to tailor it to your individual needs.Diabetes is at increased risk with PCOS but that doesnt mean you will get it.

Hello. Welcome to S.C. PCOS can be very hard to understand; it's complicated. Like the other poster said, your best bet is to start out by reading the stickys under the Newbie section.
Here's how my RE explained PCOS to me: Everyone's body produces a certain amount of insulin that is required to keep you at a normal level. With PCOS, it is constantly over producing the insulin. Any extra insulin is stored as fat. It's a cycle that just keeps going. Excess insulin causes too high of the male hormone, androgen. That is what causes the PCOS symptoms like excess facial/body hair, male pattern hair loss, etc. With increased levels of the male hormone androgen, it causes the ovaries to NOT release the egg. So, that's why the absent or infrequent periods & infertility. PCOS, if left untreated, can cause diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, etc. There is no cure for PCOS, however, you can control it. With medication (usually Metformin), diet change & exercise you should be able to control it.
You are very lucky to be diagnosed at such an early age. Most women go undiagnosed for many years...sometimes not knowing the cause of their problems until 30's, 40's, and so on. Some, unfortunately, are never diagnosed. Since you are diagnosed so young, with proper treatment, you probably will not have to worry about the major health risks in the future & infertility. They should be able to "normalize" your body. Good luck.
