Angry Not sure if i am IR

My dr. originally told me that he thought i had IR. now i don't think he is sure if i do or not. i have the markings on the back of my neck and the excess testosterone. does this mean that there is a good cahnce that i am IR?
thanks

I've not heard about judging IR by marks on the neck or excess testerone. The only way I know of to determine IR is to have what is called a GTT test (Glucose tolerance test). They feed you this really sweet (glucose) drink and then start to test your blood at two hour intervals to see how your system breaks down the insulin. Suggest to your dr you want to have this done.

Yeah, those are the marks. I had heard that they are a symptom of IR. I am a little confused. I had the glucose test done, and the dr. said it was normal. He did say that my cortisol levels were raised and that was why he thought i was IR. so he has now totally confused me!

Cosmic spell, IR is insulin resistant, a condition where the body becomes less responsive to the actions of insulin. Think of IR as pre-diabetes.
Some signs of being IR are:
1) early day irritability followed by late day drowsiness
2) desire for additional sweet after a large meal even with dessert
3) desire to eat again after a recent meal and eating to fullness
4) eating to over-fullness
5) excessive irritability just beofore meals or intense need for food
6) craving for bread, pasta or potatoes
7) pronounced drops in strength or stamina at particular times of the day
8) a constant desire to graze on high carb or high fat foods
9) night eating
10) poor sleeping habits
11) constant hunger and cravings on a low calorie diet
12) pronounced inability to lose weight despite calorie restriction

Sounds like me too! If I don't have a late night snack after dinner, I've started waking up at 4 or 5 in the morning feeling like I haven't eaten in a WEEK! And I seem to have a tendency to get sleepy and lazy in the afternoon or after a big meal.

I don't like pasta and potatoes very much because I always eat too much of it - it doesn't seem to fill me up. A bowl of spaghetti sauce by itself is enough but if I put it onto a plate of spaghetti I'll want to go back for seconds.

A few days ago I did an experiment and skipped the carbs entirely, and my body went NUTS on me - it told me I was trying to starve it even though I had three eggs for breakfast and a tin of tuna with lettuce for lunch.

It will be interesting to see what results my glucose tolerance test has - I'm doing it in a couple of days. I think I'm hypoglycaemic, and that's a sign of insulin-resistance isn't it?

Something I wondered - when I phoned up the clinic to ask if I had to book in for the test the receptionist said it only takes two hours... is that right? And is that long enough to show them any concrete results? There isn't any point in doing it if it's not going to give a reliable result!

Kajikit,

I tried the Yeast free diet (Can't remember the real name or the name of the doctor who endorses it but it has something to do with the belief that many illnesses and allergies, in particular, are due to an overgrowth of yeast in your intestines). Anyway, I tried the diet, which requires that you cut way down on carbs and I have never felt more ****ty in my life than the 1st 3 days of that diet. It sounds very much like your experiment with skipping carbs. I was allowed to eat meat and remember one day in particular when I had about 4 porkchops for breakfast (yuck, I know) and felt like I was starving myself about a half an hour later. Carbs are an evil thing. IMO, they are like a drug. When you wean yourself off of them, you are OK without them but if you stop cold-turkey, you feel like you are dying (or wish you were dead ).
