Question Not sure if ob is doing the right tests

HI -

I have been doing lots of reading over the last couple of weeks. I went to the OB/GYN because I came off the pill in june and my cycles have been very irregular since. I am overweight 5'3 200 lbs.

She did bloodwork and a vaginal u/s on my first visit. Said my ovaries were large and had the pearl cysts. I also got bloodwork done, she did prolactin, Thyroid, lipids (my cholesterol is high). Glucose came back fine.

Everything else has come back normal. I have acne and depression.

Shouldn't my doctor be testing my testosterone and fsh/lsh? or do I have this just cause of the cysts? Should I go see someone else?

Thanks
Karen

You can have the cysts without having PCOS. It's called PCO- polycystic ovaries. Or you can have PCOS with or without the cysts. Some of us have the hormone tests come back normal, but we still have PCOS. There are some research articles about this on the Articles page. My gyn did all the tests on me and I had borderline high insulin levels so he put me on met. He said my other tests were fine, but I still have PCOS. I doubt I have cysts, but I have hiary feet, weight around the middle, etc. Some docs say they rule out things like cushings & thyriod problems and if nothing comes up they call it PCOS.

k- so i went to get a saline ultrasound today because I may have a polyp as well. She looked at my bloodwork and said that my insulin was fine, so I must not have PCOS......this doesn't jive with what I am reading but I didnt speak up.

Now I could kick myself.

Should I go to another ob/gyn for a second opinion or an RE? I've been anovulatory for the 6 months since coming off of the pill.

You might want to read the article on OB vs. RE here:
http://www.soulcysters.com/do_have_pcos.html
(in the left hand column)

Either way you go, you want a doctor who has a background in PCOS. If you don't know of one in your area, you can download the directory in my siggy, or post a request further down the board in FIND A DOCTOR.

The right doctor can make all the difference.
