that is really awful!! My doctor said that to me also, but he said the reason was because hes more of a family friend and would feel awkward doing certain things. which i would have to agree with. but non the less he reffered me to one of his close friends who was an endocrinologist.Your doctor cant refuse like that, its not acceptable.

Default PCOS help in Birmingham

Am new to the site and so have only just come across this thread but hope my experience can help any Birmingham PCOS sufferers find help.

I was diagnosed at 20 (now 28) but did not really understand or seek help for my PCOS until my hair started to fall out a couple of years ago. After a couple frustrating visits to the doctor and being persistent, I was referred to a PCO clinic run at City Hospital, Birmingham. The clinic is run by Dr. Gabrielle Downey (who recently featured on C4's The Hospital) who is an OB/GYN who suffers from PCOS herself. I initially saw a junior doctor who told me that my hair loss was due to BCP and got so frustrated that I paid to see Dr. Downey privately at The Priory, Birmingham. She was fantastic and her realistic but proactive approach gave me so much hope. She tweaked my metformin dose to help me lose weight and recommended two drugs that might help my hair. Unfortunately I have yet to resolve my hair problem (cyproterone and finasteride) but would definitely recommend Dr. Downey as someone who will listen to you and help. I did get to see her on my subsequent visit to City Hospital so do persist in getting a referral to her service and getting to see her in person.

Hope this is helpful!

that's absolutely APPALLING!!! contact your local medical panel, and try to get onto another doctor's panel, but before that, PLEASE get in touch with the Patients Association. you need some real advice on this immediately. i would make a formal complaint, personally. does this doctor have a practice manager? you should discuss it with them, and also make sure that you put a formal complaint in place with higher authorities. this is disgraceful behaviour on the part of your doctor.

stay strong.

omg i'm so shocked at all the comment the drs have said to you all, report em to your local health authority and move practices.

i am lucky enough to work and be a patient at my dr surgery, only registered there recently tho, but my dr seems to be looking after me very well she is lovely she is only about 35 which i think helps, she is easy to talk to than some old codger that came out of med school god knows when and is not up to date with things. i think women are more understanding than men.

my old dr diagnosed me with pcos in 2004 off blood tests alone and told me to guess............................................. ....lose weight. But at that time i didnt want kids and just carried on with dianette.

my body clock has starting ticking at me and its all i can think about, so i have started trying to lose weight last july and so far have shifted 2.5 stone but can i lose anymore can i hell!!!!! so when i came back of my hols switch to my new doc , she is re- doing my bloods day 3 and day21 to see if i'm ovulating and going for a scan on the 14th . so fingers crossed for me.

day 3 bloods are totally normal i'm so shocked, trying not to count my chickens yet tho.

good luck to all of you

xxxxxxx

unborn angel = at a guess metformin to start with, would depend tho on ur symptoms and whether your ttc or not . metformin is the good alrounder, helps you lose weight, and can kick start ur periods back and i think it can help with zits too. hair?? some times the prescribe a cream vanquia or spironolatone tabs help slow the growth and it comes back thinner!

Just come to this thread and that doesn't sound right at all. My GP has been helpful, she prescribed a BCP (Dianette) but the last few times I've been into the dsurgery she's not been available, so I was given appointments with one of the other doctors there. He admitted to not really knowing much about PCOS and is sending me to the hospital to see a gynacologist.

If I were you, well I'd see if I could see another doctor at the surgery, or change doctors.

That is awful - I would have complained there and then until someone agreed to see me! lol. I m on the wait for the gyno now have been waiting for 8 weeks! Still doesnt look like I m going to get an appointment until the middle of November I ve been told by the hospital!! Considering just paying for the initial consultation privately to try to speed things up a bit. Has anyone done this???? I cant afford to go fully private I just want to jump the initial queue! This will hopefully speed whatever treatment I may or may not need depending on first consultation.

Doctors are a mess. I was 15 when my doc told me I had PCOS (no tests, just from irregular periods and facial hair) and wouldn't be able to have kids. I was devastated! Been controlled by the pill since and only recently started ttc so hoping my new doc will be able to help. My family planning nurse is really nice so that's a start.

omg the doctors are ridiculous, there is one doctor at me surgery that i like, a man who isnt very young, all the others never seem to listen to anyone.
i was lucky enough to see him and as soon as i told him about irregular periods he referred me to a gyno, who did bloods, n sent me for a scan, diagnosed me and now have regular checks, it was all really quick
i feel really lucky now, i cant believe how many bad experiences people have had with their doctors, id defo complain, too many doctors are too quick to just blame every problem on 'one of those things you just gotta deal with' 'need to lose weight' or 'need to stop smoking' and therefore dont actually think they need to find out whats actually wrong
