Hi - I've been reading the posts on this board for the past several days trying to educate myself about PCOS. I think I have a fair chance of being diagnosed because of my symptoms: irregular periods, facial hair, overweight, and dark skin on my underarms. I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure while being treated for gallbladder attacks - it was removed on 5/3.
The family medicine doctor that I was seeing for that did a lot of blood work prior to the surgery, but none of the things that should be checked for a PCOS diagnosis were mentioned. I did mention that I had not had a period since March. She confirmed I wasn't pregnant (we aren't using any b/c but aren't actively ttc either). I had never heard of PCOS yet, so I didn't know to ask about it. When I went in for a follow up for my blood pressure medications, she just mentioned that I should really try to lose weight.
I didn't think much of the missing periods because that had happened before, but then I had some bleeding (it would stop right away) on a couple of days. I called to make an appt. with this same family doctor, but cancelled after learning of PCOS and doing some research. I found a local ob/gyn who had the following in her bio:
Special Interests: preventive health care, menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, vaginal surgery
I have an appt. with this ob/gyn on August 1st. I'm hopeful that she'll be sympathetic to my concerns and be willing to do all the testing that is talked about on this message board (which, by the way, is GREAT!) I don't want to be too optimistic, but do you think I can be somewhat sure that she'll be willing to listen and try things instead of telling me to just lose weight?
Sorry this is so long-winded, but I find that this is all I seem to be thinking about lately. Thanks, Jean
Hello and Welcome to SC!! If the doctor you have an appointment with on 8/1 doesn't listen either, then I would continue looking until you find on that will listen to you. I'm a big girl myself and my doctor didn't give the run around about losing weight before starting treatment. He immediately ordered the blood work I needed to start treatment. There is also a thread on the board where people have listed size friendly and pcos friendly doctors. If one in your area isn't listed post you location, SC has lot of members. There is probably someone from your area that can recommend a doctor. 'm new here myself, this is a great site for information and the other cysters are all awesome people.
